  • Long Service Award

As a reward () for my 20 years service to the NHS, I am to be given £200 this month. This can either be paid into my salary (on which I would pay tax) or I can request vouchers (I think these are probably Meadowhall and nothing garden related, information which should aid your suggestions for my query). I obviously would like to get something useful, maybe get some non-dalek compost bins or a cold frame or two, but my colleagues are urging me to get something significant like a piece of jewellery or a watch.
    Suggestions please?

What could be more significant than a coldframe? Deffo get something for the garden Auntie Florrie if that's what you want, you'll treasure it more.

Oh, and congratulations on your award x

Get what you like! It's for you to spend how you wish

And congratulations for staying in the NHS for that long.

You could get a really lovely, long-lasting cold-frame with that much money If that's what you fancy, that's what you should get.

The shed on my #2 plot was the last plot-holder's retirement gift from the school he worked at about 20 years ago; it's still in great nick

                    Well done you.

You could point out to them that as you're a keen gardener and spend a lot of your time upto your knees and elbows in compost, jewellery really isn't appropriate to you as you'd have to take it off whenever you were gardening and would be worried about losing it.

A coldframe/shed on the other hand, would be ideal because you'd be able to do what you love doing and your purchase would always be reminder of how hard you've worked, your loyalty to your employer and the fact that you're obviously appreciated as a longstanding and valued employee. Job done, sorted .

I deal with Long Service Awards for where I work....

I have ordered motorbike parts, cuckoo clocks, antique violins, cookers, cameras, beauty vouchers, jewellery, wine, furniture, art, cycling accessories and garden centre vouchers in the last year....

If you want a coldframe - get one!! If I had a posh watch or jewellery, it would spend most of its life in a box or on a shelf, as I'd never wear it!

If you get vouchers use them for Christmas/birthday prezzies then buy what you want elsewhere with the money you would have bought the prezzies with.

That's what I did when work gave me £100 in Argos vouchers.

Trouble with that is Bren, that I would use it for gifts to others and then not treat myself!

Thanks very much for all your suggestions, I'll let you know what I do!
