That vital ingredient!

I usually make my grandkids a birthday cake. Our Williams 10th is on thurs. I ran out of ideas yonks ago so decided to keep it plain and simple this time. Just 2 cakes one representing the 1 and the other the 0. First one came out fine - popped the other one in the oven and watched and waited. It came out looking like something the dog had brought in or thrown up.
Can you guess the missing vital ingredient?

I've never not put sugar in mi cakes, but I've got the flours mixed up before now...several times . They'd have made really good man hole covers .
