I need advise form parenty types please

My eldest boy really really wants a DS for christmas. He really really wanted one for his birthday in July but we put him off as there was going to be a new version released in September. (OH informs me that this means the old ones will be a) worth peanuts and b) as he is an electronics enginner/designer he can't bear the thought of old technology - don't get me started on that one lol)

My dilemma is that the new one that was going to be released in September has now been put back til Feb/March.

Now I don't want to have to tell my son that he can't have it AGAIN as the release date been put back as he was very understanding about not getting it for his birthday, and has only got this one thing on his christmas list... But OH is quite insistant that he won't buy him an 'almost' out of date one.

Ho hum - I don't know which side to come down on! What to do!!! HELP!!!

Advice needed, and don't tell me he should be playing outside on his bike or be grateful for an orange and an old cardboard box cos I know all that already

At the risk of putting the cat among the pigeons - as soon as the 'new' one is available in shops, there with be another in development. Will your OH therefore say no again? I would buy the current one and make your boy happy. I think these days it is impossible to keep up with the latest gadgets really.
    Happy Gardening,

I'm with Shirl on this one. Buy it for him, it's his birthday, you can't make him wait again surely?

Shirley, I am told this design has been about for 6 years so is really really old technology-wise! The new one won't be replaced for a few years.

RL, he will be 7 next birthday.
ALL his friends have one of these wretched things!
He would like one to a) be like them
andb) for having as entertainment in the car when he visits his other nanna every other week. It's a looong way for him to be amused with eye-spy! lol

Ah, that makes a difference. Could you not try to get him one second hand (e.g. cheap) so that he can have the new one when it's out? It's a dilemma for you, especially as he's only 7. What does he want to do?

Mil has a DSi, Mike has a DSLite, and Sam has a really old 'fat' DS. The difference between the 3 is minor, although the technology has changed a couple of times since we got the 1st one. A seven year old IS NOT going to notice the difference. And the 'old' technology is pretty good anyway - none of ours has had to be replaced/repaired. Just get him it now, and tell your OH if he's that bothered he should buy one for himself when the new ones come out

Surely the DSi has not been out long? I also agree with the others, let your OH buy the latest one when it does eventually come out

                      I like this plan!

The one coming out has 3d stuff on it and can do swivelly-motion things and new stuff. I don't think he will notice the difference either. After all his buddies have the old version too.

I will tell OH I have decided (with a little help from my friends). I don't think he should have to keep waiting just cos the new one been delayed. It's not his fault.

Mine has a DS lite, (shes 7 by the way) She isnt interested in whether its the most current version, but more concerned that she has the game she wants to play on it.

Maybe the craving the latest version is a boy thing then?? Or is it just your OH wants the most current one, so HE can have a go??

i would compromise and get him a second hand one from ebay(you can pick up a rally good one still with the box for around £70) and use the rest of the money to get him more games than he would have otherwise been able to get,

my youngsters both have the older version and dont know the difference (age 4 and 5) and my 11 year old reckons that the original ds is better than the new version the DSi for what its worth and actually said no when i suggested the dsi for chrimbo!!

you will probably find that it is more the thought of having one rather than the actually having it that they want because as soon as i bought the little ones theirs the novelty soon wore off and they are back to their bikes and cardboard box etc....
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand
