And for anyone looking to buy a machine, buy a panasonic. It's a bit more expensive but it doesn't go wrong. No idea why the cheapie machines aren't as reliable but thus speaketh the voice of experience. We melted a bit of the plastic from the side of the panasonic and it still work fine.

Top tip: Don't put the remoska next to the breadmaker!!

The Panasonic breadmaker manual is quite specific about which flours to use.

White flour - "Strong flours: Milled from hard wheat. High content of protein, needed for producing gluten to make dough rise. Do NOT use plain or self-raising flour as a substitute for bread flour."

Wholemeal flour: " Makes bread rich in minerals, but lower in height and denser than bread baked with white flour because the gluten stands are cut by the edges of the bran flakes and germ."

I think a breadmaker might solve the bread problem when we are away as
        we dont have an oven.
However we live in small Italian village which only has ordinary flour so if the bread maker is so fussy about flour/yeast maybe it wont work.
I need large huinks of bread to fill us up as we work hard on the land.
Not sure what a dutch oven is.
We tried digging a big hole in the ground putting a fire in it letting it go out and then putting a stew in it. Result 6 hours later uncooked inedible food

yes I thought about that but on the whole it is completly baking boiling hot all the time we are there, we live most of the time outside and eat what we have grown. So mainly salads and veg. However we do eat alot of bread.
We only made a stew as someone gave us a joint of wild boar they had shot!!

You can bake stuff in a slow cooker too - spuds etc. Not sure if you could do bread but I have recipes for cakes.

You need a remoska (Welcome to Remoska | The Original and best cooker from the Czech Republic)

We got one when we were doing up the house and the kitchen and had nothing bar one electric induction ring and this. we ate like kings.

                  It's a mini portable cooker/oven/slow cooker.

You can knead bread, prove it in the remoska and then bake it in there. Might need to experiment a few times but should be do-able

This is the only yeast my OH will use as he's had problems with other dried yeasts. Usually buy it from Tezzies, but I know Waitrose stock it and Julian Graves the health food shop, and lakeland .
