Yes there is. Read Simon Barnes's wildlife column in the Saturday Times

Sure, he was named "Emperor" by Richard Austin the photographer. This article appeared on 5th Oct. Are you saying photographers shouldn't make a living?

I'm not a bunny hugger. Like I said before, I have no problem with culling aka management. What pricks my skin is that some chappy with a gun gets pleasure from killing animals
      A fairly balanced piece here

Was/will he be eaten? I do hope so.

I'm in the Bambi shouldn't be hurt/killed school, but I also know they need to be culled. I'm also a major hypocrite because I eat meat but couldn't hurt/kill it myself.

You don't wanna be in my head, it's always turmoil when it comes to this

How old was the stag- anyone know?? ( I've no sound on this laptop)..has anyone said???

Thing is- over here he'd have been lucky to have reached adulthood

I don't know the full story ( will we ever???) but if he was inbreeding then that's no good is it???

What I am saying is that there is no proof that he was the biggest land mamal in the UK and just because the photogrpher said he was doesn't make it so. And from what people are saying on other forums then there are bigger deer in Norfolk and probably bigger deer in Exmoor alone, its just a media frenzy.

He was about 12 years and the editor of the British Deer Society had this to say:
                  quote
But at the age of 12, the Emperor was nearing the end of his fertile days. Deer of that age are prone to TB, broken legs, lungworm or losing teeth, which make it difficult for them to graze. Culling their numbers is not just a kindness, but a necessity, both to keep the red deer population in check and to keep it healthy

12 ?...that's about the natural lifespan isn't it????

Maybe a quick death by an expert marksman at the right time is better that being badly injured in a fight with another stag and then needing culling.

Still , it's always sad to see an end to a life- especially that of such a magnificent animal.

I think the meaning was they were shot whilst pregnant, but not if they had young 'at foot'.....
