I once attended a 'ecology day' at Parndon Wood hosted by the wonderfully named Vyvien Veal.....The prefered management method of the deer was a selective cull of the females whist pregnant but not with young - stags were not targeted unless ill or very old

I hate the thought of such a magnificent animal be killed in the name of 'sport'. A deer herd manager was interviewed on the radio this morning and made the point that the money generated from shooting parties enables them to manage the herds for the greater good of the majority of the animals and for their future well-being.
Can't say that I'm convinced!Gardening is a matter of your enthusiasm holding up until your back gets used to it.

What makes me really sad about this is there is never any mention in the papers of the illegal, poisonings, shootings, destruction of nests of some of our most endangered birds of prey that happen on a regular basis, but a soon as animal that to a certain extent has been "Disneyfied" then the media whips everyone up into a frenzy, despite the fact that deer in some parts of the country are a plague and despite in this instance the beast was legally shot as part of a deer management programme. Strange ol world.
