I don't agree GN. Far better to be shot quick and clean, than to die of old age/starvation/weakness. Just my opinion

I agree, it is sad when any animal dies.

      I also agree with this.

I once attended a 'ecology day' at Parndon Wood hosted by the wonderfully named Vyvien Veal.....The prefered management method of the deer was a selective cull of the females whist pregnant but not with young - stags were not targeted unless ill or very old

This stag was apparently a supreme example of his kind.

A marksman with a gun is much better than with anything else I would say. I dont believe he was "supreme" example, I believe it's a story that being blown out of all proportion to sell newspapers and to make a certain photographer who is also a reporter some money. Because of his age the meat wouldn't of been much use and if it was part of a planned cull through a deer management programme and some matey wanted a trophy then as long as the matey was a competant shot I dont see what all the media fusss is about.

If the females weren't pregnant with young - what were they pregnant with?

I hate the thought of such a magnificent animal be killed in the name of 'sport'. A deer herd manager was interviewed on the radio this morning and made the point that the money generated from shooting parties enables them to manage the herds for the greater good of the majority of the animals and for their future well-being.

                          Can't say that I'm convinced!

Who said he was, the photographer, is there is any proof. There is another guy who is a moderator on a wild life forum who said he has seen more than one deer that is as big and maybe bigger than the "emperor", so should we believe him. I am not saying he wasnt a great looking animal but not the "supreme" animal that he is or was made out to be and in any case it is irrelevant as it is a word that is being used in an emotive way to garner (and quoting a DM style of reporting) fury, outrage, etc, etc.

What makes me really sad about this is there is never any mention in the papers of the illegal, poisonings, shootings, destruction of nests of some of our most endangered birds of prey that happen on a regular basis, but a soon as animal that to a certain extent has been "Disneyfied" then the media whips everyone up into a frenzy, despite the fact that deer in some parts of the country are a plague and despite in this instance the beast was legally shot as part of a deer management programme. Strange ol world.

there's never any mention of anything in the news that won't grip some sentimental persons heart and twist it, or incite some kind of fear or outrage.
