I put out a slow cooker request on freecycle, as my electric hob is no good for simmering a chicken stock, for example.

Ended up with a Tower Compact 1.5 litres (low temp only) and a Tower Auto 3.5 litres, which has the option of low, high and auto. I immediately recognised the Tower Compact as I'd bought the exact same model sometime in the 80's, but passed it onto a friend who was in need, so I'm not sure if I ever used it.

Looking forward to trying them out this winter and checking out recipes on here.

stella - you can use cheaper cuts of meat too, as they're in there for such a long period (compared, to say roasting in the oven) - they come out so tender, and just melt in your mouth!

My mrs also makes some irish thing, can't remember the name in there... with sausages - the sausages are a bit of a strange texture after being in there, but still nice!

Oh yeah - and you can do dumplings in the stew in there, towards the end too!

You'll love it. especially now it's getting colder.
I got a 2 person one from Lakeland for about £20 and a fabulous book that I remember was really good value - just called slow cooker. It really helps to have a book that explains all about the theory to get the most out of it.

bung everything in cold, unless you want to colour the meat first. Vegetables, especially root vegetables don't cook as fast as the meat for some reason, I thought it was weird when I first read that but it turns out to be true.
I just got a tower compact from freecycle too, so far it's done beef stew, goulash twice, and thai curry. They all came out well.

Thanks Taff so do I put the veg in longer than the meat or the same time?

I think you just put the veg at the bottom ..? Mind you, I just make sure I chop them all up fairly finely and I don't need to worry about what goes where in the pot.

The one thing I DON'T like done in a slow cooker is mince. I've tried it a couple of times and the texture was just really weird - it was like it didn't break up at all and came out in big lumps. It may have been something I did or didn't do but ugh, it was disgusting, really disgusting.

I do stews and casseroles a lot in it ... If you get low cost stewing steak and do it in the slow cooker it comes out an absolute treat.

Also, people seem to always be saying you need to brown the meat. One morning when I was in a rush to get to work I thought stuff it, I'm not going to bother browing it. And you know what - I couldn't tell the difference! So I never bother now.

I got a fairly large volume slow cooker for a wedding present and it's great for batch cooking for the freezer.
