making your own moisturising cream

I have a recipe for a moisturising cream and would really love to give it a go. I have nearly all the stuff except the oil, this one calls for almond oil but I have none of that so could I replace it with olive oil or any oil. Does that make sense?

Prob could, but when I made bath bombs last year, I bought almond cooking oil from Sainsburys! Worked like a dream and was only about a quid. Can't see olive oil being a problem - it will be lovely for the skin I reckon.

What recipe is it? I keep thinking that I'd like to make my own too sometime.

Make sure if giving it away or selling it that the recipient knows it has nut oil in. Sounds good.

I don't know the full story, but there are different types of almond which produce different types of almond oil!

The Aromatherapy Shop (online) sells Sweet Almond Oil for £1.95 for 100ml, if that's any help!

I get sweet almond oil from Holland & Barrett. It's a very good, gentle natural lubricant

Is almond oil ok on really sensitive skin. I dont know why but I feel uncomfortable using almond oil. I may just replace it with olive oil as I think it would be safer. The only reason is that my skin is ridiculously sensitive, I cant even touch chamomile

Lovely idea Jax. I have always beleived that coconut oil is the nearest to sebum but have just googled it and it is suggested that camelia oil is amongst the best. Do a google and take your pick.

I started a thread on Christmas homemade presents. I make a lot of skin salve etc, check it out and post your recipe on there

Oats and almond moisturising body cream.

300ml water
2 tbsp rolled oats
2 tsp beeswax
2 tsp emulsifying wax
40 ml almond oil
2 tsp honey
2 tsp vit C powder
6-12 drops chamomile essential oil (optional)

In a pan, heat the water until boiling and then add oats. Simmer for 10 mins. Strain the oats, reserving the liquid - you need 200ml.

Heat the beeswax and emulsifying wax together very gently in another pan with the almond oil until the waxes are fully dissolved. Take off the heat and immediately whisk ina little of the oat milk into the wax mixture. Keep adding the hot oat mixture , a little at a time, making sure it is well mixed between additions, until you have used all 200ml.

Stir in the honey and vit C powder and, if desired, add in a few drops of chamomile essential oil, which acts as a preservative, is anti-inflammatory and a delicious scent. (Dont worry if you dont have chamomile - you can use any oil you have around). Pour the cream into a wide necked jar, and seal at once.

I have made a small batch to give it a go but left out the honey, vit C powder and chamomile. Im allergic to chamomile and didnt have honey or vit C.

it has made a lovely rich cream. Really lovely. I am going to make some more but with lavendar. I have another basic recipe which is:

250 ml warm water (you could swap this for any herbal decoction or infusion)
2 tsp beeswax
6 tsp emulsifying wax
40ml sunflower oil (or any type of oil)
2 tsp vit C powder (optional)
6-12 drops whichever essential oil takes your fancy.

Make in the same way as the other one.

I've made my own creams, or lotions and potions as my offspring call them, for thirty years. I use ordinary sunflower oil as it cheaper and is every bit as good as almond etc unless you are sensitive to it.
I think it would split if you froze it, Jax, but it keeps very well in the fridge. I make enough for a few weeks at a time. It will go mouldy if you keep it too long, especially if you use any organic ingredients. Besides, it's nice to ring the changes with regard to essential oils and so on.
