There was the first book he wrote after he recovered from his accident - it was co-written by his also writer wife. The book started out about how tough it was to be the less well known writer wife of a famour author etc etc. It was a pile of cr*d. I think I couldn't take any more after p21 -which NEVER happens.

Some of his recent stuff is readable, but you're right, his earlier work is much better. (Agree with you about Patricia Cornwell too).

Whistle And I'll Come To You (BBC Ghost Story For Christmas 1968) - very chilling.

Book - The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters is a perfect 'curling up with an old-fashioned scary ghost story' book (love Fingersmith too).
Is that based on the MR James story? I have not seen that adaptation....thanks for suggesting it.
I can also recomend The Others

I have not read any Sarah Waters, but have one in my book pile from the charity shop. Thanks again for the recomendation!
