Womble, you're quite right about the winter of 46/47. My sister was born the end of November 1946. my mother said it was so cold she put my new baby sister in a drawer from the "chest of drawers" and kept her by the side of the fire until the cold spell had passed.
    No central heating then unfortunately.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

Good film Bubblewrap - back in those days we still had a railway line. Now it's the cycle lane to town

Thanks for the railway link BW it took be back, in 1963 I was 8 year old and spent that winter playing in the fields behind our house and waving to train drivers who were my heroes at that time.

Boxing Day 1962 we left my aunt's house to go home after visiting for Christmas, and it started snowing on the way, lasted about 3 months!
A couple of years later we spent Easter with the same aunt, and the day we left, it started snowing.... That time it only stayed for about 3 days!

Snowed in this morning. Supposed to be taking 89 year old Ma to eye clinic. We have a long, steep drive and daren't get the car out - we'd be backing with skiddy wheels onto a main (for round here!) road! Re-scheduled appointment. Lovely walk round village though, but it's impossible to tell where the path ends and the road starts, leading to a number of joltings to the old back..

Just as a blacksmith never wears a glove on his hammer hand a railman doesn't (or didn't?) wear gloves on his shovel hands!

We live in a teeny wee village not far from St Andrews and we definately do have a community spirit alive and well. So far this week, i have shared our tea bags with one neighbour; borrowed milk from another neighbour; had a phone call from yet another neighbour to say that she is braving the elements in her land rover and trying to make it to the nearest town (6 miles away) and was collecting orders from everyone in the village; and i have visited all those closest to me to a) check they are ok, and b) see what they want ordered from the shopping trip!

i do think our wee village is a good example of community spirit!

oh, and i'm just off to make soup for sharing with a couple of older neighbours...

What an interesting read this thread is. It's true, we've never had it so good. My memories of snow are very few are far between only being 38. A few winters of sledging and school closures but never being snowed in.

                              Keep the stories coming.

We had a short walk to the paper shop today, and it seems the snow has been a good excuse for dogwalkers not to pick up. You think you're just walking on virgin snow until you get that telltale whiff ...
