How many people do clear the shelves? We have 3 supermarkets near us (it's a small town) and one has run out milk, another has run out of bread but not both.
I personally think it's just that some supermarkets have had no deliveries for 2-3 days and therefore, some things have just run out as people naturally buy them. Everything is just-in-time nowadays arent they?

Unbeliveable anyone else had any problems like this?.Originally posted by Two_Sheds View PostEasy tiger.

If it's a small corner shop, then it will be being used by many more people who would normally go to the supermarket, but can't get there at the moment. That's why they've run out, not because somebody has gone in and bought 20 loaves in one go
Our Co-op has totally run out of potatoes. Not because people have bought them all in a fit of panic buying, but because they come from Scotland, and the wagon hasn't managed to get to the depot.
Honestly, talk about paranoia...

I agree more people use the corner shop when the weather is bad. As for milk I used to go through 6 pints a day when my lot lived at home. Cereals morning, noon and night especially my eldest.
Deliveries are not getting through and if like seahorse you thought you had done your shopping then told sorry cant deliver then you would be in queer street.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak

However, people do strip the shelves: it happened last year with salt. People will (naturally) take all they can carry if they're allowed to, it's why supermarkets put limits on their special offers - only 3 per person, that kind of thing.
And someone will eat all the cheese in our fridge at home, not thinking that someone else might like some.Last edited by Two_Sheds; 02-12-2010, 07:44 AM.All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

We've a Tesco and Lidl both 5 mins from my house. Tesco is empty, Lidl is rammed full (as you have to cross a main road ).
Mad.
I hate to admit it, but we're looking at a 4x4 now - sick of being stuck in the snow. RWD + snow/wet mud just don't go. Just pricing up winter tyres too, no doubt this'll hurt.

After many years running food shops, both small and large, i have long since learnt that people are greedy when things are in short supply. For myself, i have enough in my freezer and pantry to last me a couple of months. enough tatties for 3 weeks and fresh, frozen and long life milk for 2 weeks.
However, this prolonged cold snap will have long lasting shortages in its wake so if you see it now and it will keep, and you need it then stock up.
Its good job we had a record crop of beans to freeze down.

Where I live I am lucky cos I live in the town and it takes me about 2 mins to walk to, Asda, Co-op, ten mins to walk to Tesco, Sainsbury's, as well as costcutter in the town and a couple of corner shops. The market is at the bottom of the hill, so if they have food I can get it.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak

I think, rather than greedy, arpoet they can be a bit silly. Panic buying does sum it up. Most of us have a good storecupboard/freezer.
So we've all had a shedload of snow, but it's not permanent. Things will get back to normal eventually. In the meantime we can live off what we have, whether it be tinned, packet or frozen. I doubt many of us will starve.
Just so long as the central heating doesn't go off.
