Heating conservatory

Any good advice please, my mum is over from spain for xmas and sleeping on a sofabed in the conservatory

Its bladdy freezing in there !!! I could do with some suggestions anyone !

I remember sleeping in sub zero temperatures in a mountain cabin. The windows were open but covered in fine mesh. The trick will be to have a cosy electric blanket / hot water bottle and some nice warm bedding over and under. The only uncomfortable bits are getting into and out of the bed!

Sounds good to me! Heating a conservatory is a serious expense (very few of them are any good at staying warm on a winter night), and if it's just for sleeping, it makes more sense to just heat the actual bed!

Layers of animal hide. I have friends who went, they said it was lovely and warm.

I have put an oil filled rad in there on low and kept the door open to the lounge as it seems to be the place where the condensation collects as soon as you open the door. I spent all day sunday cleaning the upvc as it had started to get a bit of mould around the bottom, so want to keep it dry as much as poss.

I have a Heated blanket and thick duvet to use.

Condensation happens when warm air (which is usually moist) arrives somewhere cold. The air cools down, and can't carry as much moisture. That is what condensation IS! That is what is happening at the lounge door, the warm indoor air is hitting the cold.
The warmer you keep a room or space the more essential it is to ventilate it in order to minimise condensation. Dryness depends on ventilation!
It WILL cost a lot to keep a conservatory more than 'off cold' at this time of year, but keeping it slightly warmed, AND VENTILATED will reduce the risk of condensation mould.

Do you have blinds on your conservatory windows. I have holland blinds and it sure makes a difference when they ar pulled right down. I also have a rad in thetre, its linked to the house which has gas central heating..
Bubble wrap is also good on the windows and if you are really stuck, newspaper taped on to the windows will work just as well.
I know you might think i'm taking it too far, but if you have a tent you could put that in the conservatory. That way your mam would be well insulated.

We get that in on all our windows (plastic, uPVC) even thought the windows don't actually fit and have a draught blowing through them

I have lined curtains but I have taken them down as they were getting damp, I am going to see how much to put a rad in there from the central heating next year.

Having the oil rad on low and keeping the door open has made it quite dry and cosey so I will put the curtains back up.

My old wooden windows in the rest of the house never get mouldy, would never change them for upvc.
