In Arabic, the word halal means permitted or lawful.
Halal foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines. According to ... the Qu'ran, Muslim followers cannot consume the following:
- pork
- animals that were dead prior to slaughtering (ie died from disease or old age, or roadkill)
- animals not slaughtered in the name of Allah (Allah is God. ie the animal must be blessed before being killed)
- blood (this is why the animal is drained of blood)
I don't eat meat, I haven't for 22 years (apart from the time someone thought it would be funny to swap the labels on the pub curries we had).
I'm not a Muslim and I don't know any Muslims (it is Norfolk).
If I did eat meat, I think I would like to have the animal blessed, and God thanked, before I ate it. I would like its death to be taken seriously, personally, and for it to be killed quickly. (Anyone who was unfortunate enough to see the Iraq beheadings will know that a very sharp knife across the throat is a very swift death)
The animal dies quickly, then the blood is drained out
I've seen slaughterhouse videos where the machinery doesn't always do the job properly: animals are not stunned, not properly stunned, struggling, the blade doesn't cut where it should so the animal is still alive but horribly wounded...
I believe that people should have the choice to eat halal meat or not, but they should inform themselves what it actually means, rather than make something up for themselves or read about it on FacebookLast edited by Two_Sheds; 11-12-2010, 09:09 AM.All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

I'm not sure what you mean about facebook 2S, I haven't seen anything on there myself.
But I would just like the food to be labeled so we consumers can choose to buy or not as the case may be. And my daughter doesn't want to eat meat that has been killed in the halal way, but she doesn't want to stop eating meat. She has researched it (she did want to be a vet until last year, so she found out all sorts of information on animals from birth to death), and she knows all about it and that is her choice.

The question of whether an animal remains 'conscious' for more than seconds after its throat has been cut sufficiently for fast bleeding will always be debatable, but I for one think that whether it has suffered before the knife arrives is MUCH more important!Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Take a look at how animals are treated in a 'normal' slaughterhouse, while awaiting the fatal moment!Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

gosh- i have been itching to post on this thread, but couldn't access the forum. twosheds has said exactly what i would have said if i had been able to.
the important thing is how the animal has been treated in life, and during the killing process. i have no problem with a muslim prayer being said, my concern is with the speed and method of dispatch. i have seen articles of animals skinned whilst still alive, due to the speed of the 'production' line. this was in a british abbatoir, not a halal one.
i am afraid that as with any other business, a slaughterhouse is only as humane as it's staff. ( and i know there are some that are good, just as there are others which aren't) anyone who wants to view an animal going to slaughter- there is a video on youtube showing the staff urging on a horse in it's last gallop- proir to being shot.imo, they woyuld be more likable if they were praying, in any religion, therefore at least showing some respect, rather than laughing at the horses panic and distress.
