In 1985 I was 16!!
Looking at the price of computers - the Sinclair and Spectrum at £120 plus - 3 weeks wages for my step Dad.
Cameras - old SLRs that cost nearly £200 for a 'cheap' make - (Pentax, Practica) I picked up and old Nikon for £15 at the carboot and it works beautifully.

There's a dude here (where I work) with a Sony Walkman, still.. listens to it with ipod headphones though. He's a bit odd mind.
