Hey WW I also live in a council house and have to agree that it is a minority who have left the sitgmatism for the few. The previous estate I lived on was mostly ok but one person who lived next to us was awful, she made treats against us and her son was a drug dealer. That one person let down the whole of the estate and everyone else who lived there I feel. We have the same problem where we live now, our upstairs neighbours are awful but the rest of the estate are lovely people who are decent and moral.
My mum works for a housing association in merseyside and she has the same experience with tennants she has to deal with at work too, the majority are wonderful people who are responsible but just a few are difficult to deal with and rude.
I think this is currently the way of the world. There are a minority of people like the woman M2R talked about who will let down the rest and also give them a stigmatism of all being that way. It is the same way people generalise about a lot of things, it is sad that generalisations occur this way but I guess it is human nature?

Most council tenants are not chavs, but most chavs are council (or equivalent) tenants! (they don't get much option on accommodation do they?)
Definition of 'chav' for the purposes of this post, person with the kind of anti-social habits and attitudes described in the first post.Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

i think that most council tenents are decent people, but unfortuneately , in our town, the ones that get the most help ie. housing are the ones who have 'problems'. as we don't have that many home grown problems, they move them in from the main town in our area.
if you have people with drugs, drink or mental health issues, they get proirity, especially when children are involved. its a win win situation for them as they can continue to live without taking responsibility for thier actions, people earn money helping them, ie the staff of all of the agencies, charities and authorities and, apparently , removal firms get paid more as it's council work. the only losers are the decent people who can't find anywhere to live.

A lot of privately educated, 'Mummy and Daddy have a Mansion and are loaded' types are as much to blame as the so called 'chavs' from a council estate..............My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

I guess the only difference is the 'privately educated' have the (dis)advantage of having access to the money needed to hide their addiction until it's really bad?
Please don't forget that 'these' people, despite leaving a mess to clear up and costing the tax payer money are actually living humans too.Living humans that may have got themselves in the mess they're in but are very often desperate to get themselves out of it.
Many years ago I had a great friend(of the 'privatel educated' kind)she got herself hooked on heroin and alcohol at the age of thirteen...she struggled for years desperate to give up but died after an accidental OD in her early thirties...leaving a daughter behind that she loved Dearly. If cleaning herself up was as easy as that then she'd have done it....it's not!
Please don't resent your taxes going toward supporting people like her.
We're in an awkward position where we can't really afford private rent(but have to go without elsewhere)but the council don't see us as in desperate need to be housed by them....yep sometimes it gets to me but actually I'd feel awful if we were given priority over someone with mental health or addiction issues.the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx
