We had the roof re-done and kept the slates. They make great labels as you can write on them with indelible white pens and they look good too.

Just stick a tent peg through the aptly marked pot drainage hole!

Doesn't the felt tip pen mark wash off with the rain?

Like Aberdeenplotter I've used old plastic venetian blinds cut up as labels & write on them with a permanent marker pen, other than that I just use cheap white plastic labels written on with pencil which usually lasts a season & washes off with washing up liquid & a pan scrubber.

I have just picked up an old aluminium venitian blind from a skip (with permission ) and now have lots of lovely plant labels. Soft pencil writes on them and rubs off cleanly with some abrasion. Perhaps this year I will have more than guess work to go by to distinguish my tomato varieties.

i have tried cutting up old margarine/butter tub lids and write on them with a sharpie pen which seems to work fine

                    hope it helps!!

I used cut up milk cartons last year with one of those cd pens. The writing stayed on all year, and the labels were fairly small, and they all stayed well.

I cut up plastic milk cartons, not the waxed cardboard ones. They disappeared in the wind. Not very environmentally friendly!

Watch out for Sharpies, they are not as permanant as they claim. This is why I had problems identifying some of my tomatoes last year.

i have started printing dymo labels and sticking them onto bought labels. they dont come off in the rain, dont fade over time and can peel away easily when you want to reuse. they look pretty tidy and the smaller strip is exactly the right width for the plastic sticks.

All our recyclable plastic goes to the recycling depot, and that is just about all of it. If I needed a 'handmade' label (my gardening efforts are neither large enough nor complex enough to make this necessary other than ocasionally) I would simply write the label on card or paper and stick it onto whatever 'stick in the ground' item I could find, using ordinary sticky-tape, completely covering the label with the sticky-tape.
