First person through the door on New Year's Day? Intentional or unexpected? Our dogs used to be the dark and handsome ones who were let out at two minutes to midnight and then let back in as soon as midnight had passed. Sadly we have no dogs anymore, so I think I'll put himself out.

We let it creep in under the door!
My late Dad and my Ma used to have this amazing rigmarole of him going outside with a shilling and a bit of coal and he waited for the sirens to go off (in Manchester) and Ma used to listed for the pips on the wireless. Invariably she'd look out the front door for him, he'd have given up waiting and gone round the back and most New Years started with a row!
Usually I'm first in the house as I've gone out to the chickens in the morning. I'm tall, but not dark, and many say there are few stranger!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Not sure this time, we used to pop Madmax outside with a full bottle of whisky just after we had seen in the New Year. This year, Aranthos is the tallest but not darkest, we all qualify as strange! If we waited for visitors it could be next Christmas before that happens!!!!
Got a nice bottle of Talisker to toast 2011 (thanks Dad) and I can't wait to try it.Happy Gardening,
Shirley

I remember being turfed outside with a lump of coal when I stayed with my Uncle and Gran out in the sticks.
I think they must have forgot about me because the coal was frozen to my mitt by the time they opened the flaming door.
They used to get drunk then pass out and us we-ans used to raid the cocktail cabinet when they were asleep.
"I don't remeber drinking THAT much" they'd say, the next day!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

Don't first foot anyone any more, last time was a couple of years ago. When the bells strike tonight hopefully I will be in zzzzzzzz land Years ago in the 70's first footing was still a big thing - the coal, the black bun, dram. And someone always had the steak pie with tatties and veg boiled to beyond redemption, ready and waiting for the next unsuspecting first-footer If there was anything left that was your dinner on New Years Day - but it didn't really matter as you were scunnered of food by then due to the volume of shortbread, black bun and cherry bun you had consumed.

My Dad as a Scot used to bumble around a bit drunk dropping coal on the kitchen floor, by heck that used to annoy my Mum who was inevitable in her good long dress. Tonight we will probably be back home long before our kids so I will send MrH in first, he used to be dark, does that count?WPC F Hobbit, Shire police

More than likely the dog, not going anywhere we've just rented a film (Inception) I'm going to crack open a couple of cans and have a tot of the very nice brandy the father in-law gave me Christmas day.
Happy New Year All x
