I remember my Mum sending My dad out to the neighbours with a lump of (fakey) coal and a some salt. Never really knew what it was all about though! So this has been highly interesting! My Dad was Anglo indian so was tall Dark and handsome! So fitted the bill

We were last out in 2010 and first through the door in 2011.... We went to our village hall- a black tie New Years Ball and yes, we had a ball .... No taxi, no driving and whats more all our friends were there, a wonderful evening.
BrokenOphelia.....when I was a kiddie we would listen to the ships fog horns (Thames Estuary) at midnight they would all sound their fog horns...FANTASTIC
Something else locals did in the days of metal dustbins..... at midnight folk would go out into the streets/lanes and bang dustbin lids or saucepans to herald in the New Year.

That happens here as well but it's usually the drunks falling over or in the bins or their wives wacking them over the head with the frying pan...........
