DIY Carpet laying question

i can get a nice piece of carpet in the sale fairly cheaply. the only thing is its not the right size. the dimensions are 4.1m x 3 for the room and 4x4m for the carpet.

obviously i can take a little of the left over bit and use it to fill the gap (although i know it's not ideal) the question is:

would it be better to just fill the 10cm gap or place the carpet further from all the wall and increase the size of the gap?

Could you not hide the gappy bit behind the settee or something?

Personally I would put the carpet at the door end, and hide the odd but under furniture. If that makes sense. Make sure you measure the carpet yourself, as it may be bigger (or smaller) than they say. Some folk don't take too much care when measuring!

I second G4, don't put the cut near the door, it'll be a high traffic area and will show after a bit

The gap will be placed along the window wall as it's that wall or the door wall which is a definite no go.

I guess the smaller the better.

well yes i know that on the surface that's the sensible thing to do, but this particular piece of carpet is only £140 for 4x4 whereas carpets measuring 4.1 x 3 cost anywhere from £250 to £500 even in the sale (and at the cheap shop) whereas the 140 bit is much better quality and very nice pile, (think classic 1970's cream shag pile carpet and it'd be spot on actually) from the expensive quality shop so seems like a much deal even though I'm going to have a little seam along one wall.

I have just brought 15m2 underlay online for 34 quid so that's a saving of 56 quid which is very good me thinks.

This is the underlay we used through the whole house we've just done up 10mm Foam Carpet Underlay - Great Value & Quality CHEAP on eBay (end time 03-Jan-11 16:30:41 GMT)

Also had a few carpets off them for the bedrooms.

Why not get the carpet you were thinking of then get a professional carpet fitter to stitch it. Then at least the job will be guaranteed and if it does break you'll have someone to moan at

i would either leave the gap, or get some double sided (sticky on both sides) carpet tape, and use this to join the small bit to the big bit, or how about a length of wood or laminate to fill the gap i have done this in my bedroom and it looks fine, at that price i would go for it,

That's good it being shag pile type carpet means you wont even see the join.

My thoughts exactly. Double sided carpet tape is the way to go!

well now i'm confused. matthews link has lead me to a couple of sites where they're offering free underlay, free carpet gripper, free door thingy and free delivery for a piece of carpet 4 x 4.25, which is more than i need for about 100 quid. it's just a simple twist pile but more durable than the cream shagg one. Plus when something gets split (it will, im clumsy and have a 2.5 year old) I wont die of a heart attack and 40 quid cheaper - much more budget friendly than all options so far.

They are a bloody good company. Small and friendly. I just worked out it cost ££40 to carpet each bedroom with the loop stuff they have. The twist pile is what we used in the living room and dining room.

If you're going to spend the money, you might as well do it properly ;-)

A word to the wise - loop pile is a devil to keep clean - stuff gets caught in the loops. However twist pile is fine.
