Would you ask to be moved

..if you were in a restaurant and a lady came and sat at the table next to you carrying with her a huge waft of perfume?

I do and have and would continue to do so.

However, one pal got quiet upset with me, saying I was mean and not tolerant of others - she could be right, but to me the smell of perfume is as offence as the smell of cigarettes.

So, would you move or be tolerant?

Suzie, I agree with you, can't stand any very heavy smells when I'm eating other than those given off by the food on the plates or being served.

Never have done but can't think of any occaisions where it's been a problem. Do share an office with two smelly guys, one of them just doesn't change his shirt often enough which is gross but the other one just reeks of product, it's almost as bad . Hate really strong smells and manmade costmetic ones in perfumes and other cosmetic products tend to be the worse as they are usually cloying and yeucky.

I don't have much of a sense of smell, but the guy next to me in the restaurant last night reeked of cigar smoke, really horrible.

I asked that he be moved to another restaurant, but no luck (he's my BiL)

When you used to be allowed to smoke in resteurants, we asked to be moved once because the persons on the next table were chain smokers!!
I dont know if I have ever had the same problem as you though, Piskie...

What a coincidence, Piskie - I had the same conversation with the Butcher this morning! I don't mind perfume, providing it isn't overpowering. If it were, I would say something. Unfortunately my Husband is a smoker, so I tend not to notice, unless it is in a non-smoking place. In restaurants, I have often offended friends by commenting on their smelling like an ashtray!

I would ask very quietly to be moved. I have asked to be moved before ie....being placed next to the toilets (a pet hate) or right in the main 'rushway' to the kitchens - waiters charging past me is a no no. I am always polite and quite discrete with my request, and thank them when moved. Having worked in that type of environment I know there are some not 'favored' places that they will try and seat you. It's all about bums on seats- no matter where the seats are!!!

Mr Z is always wanting to move tables....in the end when he offers to get the drinks in and tells me to go find somewhere to sit I don't get settled as 9 times out of 10 he will want to move.

In a restaurant it would be him that asked if Mrs Perfumery Reeks came and sat down nearby. No question.

I'd ask to be moved too. I went for a night out before christmas, and one woman in the pub knew another person I was with, and she came over to talk to her, I nearly gagged she was wearing so much perfume. I had to keep backing away from her.
I can't stand air fresheners or most mens deodarants or perfume anyway but I swear she must have used half a bottle on herself. Smelled like fly spray too. yuk.

Odd thing is I adore the scent of flowers in a garden setting and don't feel the need to ask them (or me) to move

I would ask to be moved too. I find strong scents give me a rotten headache. We went into an Indian restaurant once and I embarassed Madmax and the boys by apologising to the waiter and leaving before we ordered - my head was starting to really pound!

Some perfumes and wash powders make me sneeze so if it was really strong I'd have to move if I wanted to finish off my meal.

smell and taste go hand in hand don't they???...whatever the smell/scent/aroma????

If you can't smell the food properly then you can't appreciate the flavour ....




...what a waste if you're paying a lot of money for the meal and can't enjoy the flavours.

I would have asked to be moved as I am allergic to a lot of perfumes, so really I could argue health and safety. To be honest though it is such a kerfuffle in most restaurants for them to get a table prepped for me as I am in a wheelchair they would probably just move the other person.

Like Shirl, strong scents can give me headaches, so yes I would discretely ask to be moved and have done so in the past.
