Always have been like that! When I was little and my parents popped out I unscrewed all the door handles so they couldn't get back in As to the back up erm no I haven't but there's nothing hugely vital on there, I think!!

The problem will be accessing all your data on the old hard drive, it is possible to buy (borrow?) a Hard disc caddy to do this. Or the PC repair shop can do it. But buying and fitting your own hard disk may be a cheaper option for you.
I was thinking that, only I wouldn't know how to transfer the data. The PC shop is quite good and will give me the cheapest options before doing anything, so think I will take advice from them. Any idea how much a new hard drive would cost?

        A 1TB hard drive is about £40.

        Scan.co.uk: Samsung 1Tb Spinpoint F3 Hard Drive - HDD - HD103SJ

The spin point ones are generally recommended.

I would try going into the BIOS and changing the boot device from whatever it is (looks like floppy drive) to the hard drive in the list of bootable devices.could be that your comp is trying to boot from the floppy drive instead of the hard drive, does happen with some vista systems.

Yes, the components themselves are very cheap. You can build a high spec PC for reasonable cost. It's not too hard to do either as everything is designed to fit together.

I built my own PC to play Blu ray discs (with some help from a friend)

Drop into the BIOS screen / setup screen (DEL, F1, F2 - depending what you're running) - have a look for devices in there, it'll show you if a HDD is connected and detected - if it's picking i tup in there it may be salvageable with some freeware apps, connected via a hard drive caddy or similar...

I dont have a pc/laptop so can't lookup what menu it'll be under.. But as others have said, dropping into a store is probably the best option. If you're unsure what they've said - post back here, I'm sure one of us will be able to advise?

Okay, am in the BIOS setup. It lists SATA 0-5. 5 says 'None' so I pressed enter and it came up with another screen which said SATA auto device and then 'press enter'. I did this and a red screen came up saying 'Detecting Hard Drive...' but no more info.
