Shocking waste(cod)As for switching the species-cod to mackerel-I'm not so sure.I remember the size of mackerel in mid 90's-it was twice as big as it is now.
Couldn't watch the salmon one-for some reason it's not loading.
I'm not going to buy cod ar lemon sole-just too expensive.
As for tesco-another reason to me to dislike them(living beside tesco city already)
    Why they never mentioned herrings?

The size of the mackerel depends alot on where its caught (or at least it seems to, from experience) For instance, Cornish Mackerel are usually quite small but extremely sweet flavoured, scottish mackerel is usually much bigger which is far easier to bone and a more mature flavour, they also bake much better than the smaller ones.
Herrings were mentioned in the last ep - as a viable alternative to salmon.

All I have to do is convince my OH that other oily fish is as nice (not easy!!)

To add to the debate, what about farmed trout too? ( I bought some wild brown trout recently and the flavour is far superior! They were about 70p each more expensive than farmed rainbows)

The last episode is not loading on 4OD-will try next week.I didn't know about different kinds of mackerel,I remember average headless smoked mackerel in mid-90's weighed about 1kg,nowadays it's about half a kilo.
Convincing some people is not easy-my OH(spoiled brat) won't touch the fish if it's not white meat and there's any trace of fishbone in it.I'll eat pretty much everything and I'm not shy to use my fingers while fiddling with herrings, sprats or the other fishes

I can't get the salmon programm to run on 40D but I've watched the other two programs.
The fish that are thrown back are mainly eaten by bottom dwellers like crabs etc. As far as I know there is no shortage of deep sea crabs although the trawl nets do damage there environment.
If we equate it to land animals, do we slaughter a field full of sturdy bullocks or deer for meat to leave half of them lying on the ground to feed the rest of the food chain?

Just watched Gordon Ramsey's Shark Bait - wow, that's an eye opener (sharked finned, just for shark fin soup - bodies thrown back into the ocean - still alive, just left to drown/die).

We should be embarrassed as to how we process our food.

Sometime I feel ashamed to be part of the human race.

                  Good, that was the point!
(I mean it in a nice way )

The most important question is, will it change your eating habits concerning fish though?

                    For me - Yes.

I'm hunting out a good fishmonger and I'm going to work my way through Jamie's 10 recipes. I'm perfectly happy, in fact looking forward to eating fish other than haddock or cod. Having said that, I already bought more pollack and whiting than haddock/cod. Does anyone know how sustainable they are? Or where they come from? I think they're UK coastal waters

I've watched most of the episodes which were on last week and most of it just confirmed what was common knowledge already. Unfortunately a lot of the people who would really benefit from watching things like this won't have watched it and will continue to buy their cod / bad tuna etc. Glad to see that Tesco's got a good beating as they get away with far too much but do think that a lot of people will find what I have found in that it's actually rather difficult to find a lot of these species locally. Real shame that so few decent independant fish counters exist these days

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We had dabs for supper on Saturday.
The problem with the 'alternative fish' is this quota/discard thing, because I got the impression that they keep catching over-quota cod while trying to catch the other species.....

I missed the programme so all I can really add is that when I was little my mother took me in to the supermarkets on a secret mission to put greenpeace stickers on the front of the fishmongers and on tins of tuna saying something along the lines of "we kill dolphins" I thought it was fab...but have never ever eaten fish since!

Good for you. Little steps, that's the way to do it! And they probably had more flavour too. I went to what I'd heard was a good fishmongers today, only to discover they'd clsoed down. However, I'm going to be very close to what is reputed to be a fabulous one on Thursday, so i'm definitely popping in.
