Thats just his warm up routine for the real thing. Just wait till the females start their return, he will be in full flow of his rich sweet song, and in full breeding plumage.

Not all of them do, some stay home others try warmer climes: ie. Spain-France. Some move just down south. The ones we see are normaly 1st year Juveniles, born last summer,or they could be older weaker females just happy to stay local. Hope thats of some help.

I don't mind getting up early (kinda have a helping hand, so no real choice!).... but coming home in the dark, despite finishing at 4 makes me feel sad!

I smiled yesterday when I left work and it was light.

Not good news for someone with SAD. I cannot wait until spring!

Or until my holiday next week to asia to get away from the cold, miserable winter.

I go by the automatic pop-hole opener. It's still shut in the morning when I leave for my Mum's to help her with washing and dressing, It isn't shutting now till 4.50-ish. It does vary with the weather - bright/overcast can make a good 10 minutes difference.

It exciting isn't it? I noticed the longer daylight yesterday and all the birds chirping away. Just makes you want to get out there.

My mornings are starting earlier, unfortunately.

I'm usually just nodding off, at around 3am, thanks to Mr. G and his bl**dy snoring (I slept on the sofa last night! It was that or suffocate him with a Pillow!), and the young Cockerels start crowing, usually by about 3:30 - little s*ds.
