I love celery soup and any stew or broths with celery in. As I thought growing celery would be too labour intensive I grew celariac which turned out reasonably sized.
I added this grated to soup, stew and broth and it gave it the celery taste I was after BUT it didn't give me the celery 'texture' of the lumps of celery which I now believe is what i realy craved.
Thats why I'm going back to growing proppa celery this year.

PS I grew Celtuce last year and the lettuce like tops were really nice, but I didn't try the stems!

our celery was ok....I ended up chopping it up and freezing it and it works fine in stews etc .....I'll have a go with it again this year and will let get bigger before I plant it out. Last Summers got nibbled by something which gave it a set back.

Ornamental gourds ... my sister asked me if I was, because she really likes them! So, maybe a present? Carrots in a builders' bag ... experiment to keep the b****y carrot fly away.

I'm trying celery, turnip and swede for the first time. I'm also going to try a larger crop of leeks and cabbage.

I did, although the stems are lovely and crunchy, I found them a bit too bitter for my taste. Pulled the lot and fed them to the pigs!

I’m trying marshmallow and liquorish this year, though it may be a while till harvest. Also a few types of Tree and Cut-n-grow back Cabbage.

I've grown marshmallow a couple of years ago but was a bit downhearted to find it looked like a rather straggly five foot high Lavatera. Didn't process the roots to make marshmallows though.

Thanks for giving the height Snadger, I was thinking it was smaller, but have an area which is too damp for most things, so it will be welcome at the back, just as long as it shares nicely: D

I was going to try cardoon, but a pal said it wasn't very tasty.

                            Any thoughts?

You need quite a bit of room for cardoons - they are very like globe artichokes which can get pretty huge!
As for taste - I've never eaten any but I know Clarissa Dickson Wright has championed them as a good veg to save from extinction!

As for my own 'first' - I'm going to try scorzonera!
