Shefford smells of onions

Just saying.

On my drive to/from work I drive round the outskirts of a place called Shefford in Bedfordshire.

On some mornings, and occaisonal evenings there is a distinct whiff of onions in the air.

Fine during the summer months, but why would I be able to smell it during winter?

Ashford smells of toothpaste, coz there's a big manufacturer of it on the edge of town. Drive between Jnc 9 and 10 of the M20 and tell me you don't smell it

I have the exact correct answer for you Wayne.

Round the back of what used to be the American base "RAF Chicksands" is a place called "Rowney Warren" a Forestry Commission woodland accessed from the A600 by a road called Sandy Lane.
Almost at the end of that road is some sort of food processing and packaging firm.
I went to a neighbouring property one evening and on remarking the smell when I left was told it's often like that when they are processing garlic.

It absolutely stank, the front of Boots on a Saturday moring with all the teenage girls trying scents has nothing on it and to scale would be a pea floating in Lake Windermere.

Brilliant - I actually blat along a little stretch of the A600 before diving off along the B658 on my way to Biggleswade (work).

I did have a suspicion that it had something to do with a place called G & M Growers - a "farm shop" near work (apparently the local farms/fields supply them), but that makes more sense.

On another scent-themed note I can oft smell cereals and wheat type products as Jordans operate from the industrial/business park that I work on. Not quite the leafy rolling fields they have you believe.

Walking the dog one day last year I got chatting to a local farmer and he grows for them, apparaently they are pretty strict on their standards and how wildlife friendly the farm has to be etc.

Oooow I love smells - I used to go past Chiver's who make Jam as well as other things - it was surprisingly unpleasant, whereas the brewery in Bury St Edmunds used to smell delicious (even though I hate beer / larger) and now I can tell the difference between 'Beet feed cows and grass feed cows by the taste because the milk made by beet cows tastes like the smell of the sugar beet factory (pongy on the highest order) but my favourite smells is the coming of spring and summer - each season has it's own.

And Burton smells of yeast.

Sheffield used to smell industrial, but sadly now it doesn't.

There is a Nestles factory in Hayes - they process coffee there and when the wind is in the right direction you get the waft of coffee travelling several miles!

Ugh, gross then.
Cantley sugar beet factory is on our train ride into Norwich. The smell is truly awful: sewagey, farty, drainy.

We used to have a chocolate factory in Norwich, now it's a(nother) shopping mall

In my ignorance I glanced at this and thought it was about Sheffield, but you didn't want to say it out loud.

We mainly get the heady aromas of slurry as it's spread over the fields, it really does add a certain je ne sais quoi to line dried clothes.
