Numpty question about fish tanks...

Is it possible to keep a Fish Tank/Aquarium in full sun?

OK, I know it IS possible, obviously, but is it sensible or practical, in respect of the marine life it contains?
Would it mean more cleaning?
Would it restrict the type of fish kept?

OK, that's more than one question, but you get my drift...

Keeping a fish tank in full sun will give you two main problems:
1) Algae will grow incredibly fast
2) It will be impossible to maintain a constant temperature, and most fish can't withstand huge variations.

My tropical tank was on a south facing wall of the living room, but inbetween the french doors and the window, and the curtains shaded the sides of the tank. It was the only place to have a decent sized tank (4ft), but inspite of the protection from the curtains, the extra light would still affect the algae growth.

Have sent son a text he is at work so he will more than likely phone me later. He helps peeps set up tanks and will be answer your questions, might pass his phone number to you if he says its ok, might be easier to talk to him. If he doesnt know no one will.

algae will grow at a much faster rate as stated above but the water temp should not really be affected as the heater will be thermostatically controlled ( i guess it will actually save some energy and money as the heater will be off for longer periods during the day)

tropical fish are normally used to artificial light from the lid or tropical climate(sunny) so i think you would be ok and the algae eater will be happy..

No its not and I quote from son

Do NOT put a fish tank in a window it will go green very quickly, the best place is in a dark quite corner not near radiators or speakers from t.v and stereo's.

It will affect the fish,

Thanks JJ, you are a love. Incidentally, this is all because I've seen two 'Fish Tank Walls' on Grand Designs recently, and have had the daft idea of copying...

...and with the layout I have, it's a total non-starter then.






Does anyone know how to move the Sun?

Ours is in partial sun for half of the day during summer. The sun shines in the window from the south east so isn't direct. We keep the curtains fully closed until around 11 to avoid full direct sunshine (haven't gotten around to putting up net yet) and the tank is on the side wall around two and a half metres from the window itself.

If we don't keep the curtains closed we get a Lot of algae on the glass and it's a pain to scrub it off. It was either that position though or have the tank fall through the floorboards...

As everyone has already pointed out sun = algae so unless you fancy cleaning it every couple of weeks, keep it in a shady spot.

Stupid me, is actually assuming we'll get full sun!

The tank would be placed at right-angle to, and about 75cm (that's just under 2'6" Snadge!) away from, the main south-facing window. The window would have a blind/curtain...
