For my youngest grandchild, I bought a silver yoyo with his name engraved on it and the date and church where he was baptised. The one before that got a Harrod's teddy (they have the year on the paw). Other gifts I have given include money boxes, silver spoons, coins with their birth year on and in each case a bible, but if your relatives are not religious there's little point in that.

Another vote for a charm bracelet or necklace and/or charms. Loads of the things made these days - Pandora, Petite, Trollbeads just to name three of them. Just have to make sure that the bracelet works with most of them (I think Petite is one of the thinner bracelets and seems to fit most charms - it's the type I have).

Either that or a piece of jewellery in general I reckon to be worn when older - bought an amber necklace for the wee one I knew that had one recently.

I'd be more stumped for the boy, but my wee one did get a little silver hip flask for a present when he was born, which is very cute.

+1 for a book - you can then write a personal inscription inside so it means something in the future.
