My dad, runs their local allotment site, being a councillor, he has influence over the secretary and is very selective over who gets a plot.
You might be on the list, but if he knows you and thinks you are a waste of space, then you will only get an overgrown plot if its available.
He saves the best plots when they become available for what he determines to be true gardeners. These are people who have proven themselves on the site first, they get offered to upgrade to a better spot, before their plot becomes available to the waiting list.
I'm not saying this approach is correct before anyone shoots me down in flames. I will say though that there are only two relatively poorly tended plots on his site, and they are being reallocated this year.!!
I know you're only relating a story but feel very dubious about this policy. If there is a list then you should reach the top of it fairly and not based on somebody's personal feelings about you. However I do agree that poorly tended plots should be reallocated but not to your dad's favourite but to whoever is at the top of the list. I had no allotment experience when I took mine on (if you ignore spending time on my grandad's one as a kid) but have really worked hard on it and would have been devasted to suspect that I'd not be allowed one because somebody on the council didn't know me or my stamina for hard work.
So if the council do the lists and lettings , what does the committee do ?
The council does our list and lettings too, like many plots we don't have a committee.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
