has anyone been on to see how many crimes in their local area?

(NB: the site is slow or temporarily unavailable because they're having over 750,000 hits a minute)

I tried when I heard about it on the news last night but it said the site was too busy

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Heard it on the Radio2 this morning, forgot about it until now.

We get local crime stats in our local village newsletter - never very numerous or exciting.

Haven't had a chance to as yet, but will be doing so. TS - did you see the piece about helmet cameras when riding on your bicycle? It was on BBC Breakfast this morning. I thought of you straightaway.

We even have Police CCTV on a lampost in our street since the violent incident a few months ago, so I'm sure our area will make interesting, if scary reading! Perhaps better not look.

Was listening to the radio earlier about the new website created by the government for us to discover just how bad the crime in a postcode actually is.

From the conversations it seems to me that this site is going to achieve a number of things, 1) make people more paranoid, 2) devalue homes is under achieving areas, 3) create a good search tool for criminals.

Would you actually want to know the number of crimes reported in your postcode?

Sorry TS, just started another thread on the same subject,

                Mods, cooey, please recycle mine!

I haven't managed to get on the site yet, but I don't expect it will be particularly surprising. I think ignorance might be better though. From what I can gather, the site won't tell you any specifics, but just enough to bother you.

Like most things in life, a little knowledge is not a good thing.

No, but a couple of people have told me about it. I'm hoping it's on the 6 o'clock

I tried this morning and it says our post code or village doesn't exist.

I did it showed a cyclist being carved up by a silver van, before it got a little heated. I think helmet cams are a double edged sword. Who will police the stored content. Surely this will be used for ill deeds such as weirdos outside schools, and playgrounds.

You create something to resolve a problem, and someone will manipulate it for wrong doing.

Nobody needs to police the footage. If an incident happens, the film is sent to the relevant authorities and/or employer, in the case of a company driver being aggressive/dangerous (after I made this film the police have done a sweep of the area, stopping the dangerous parking).

I also use mine to report pot holes, fly tipping and vandalism in my town - that benefits everyone

If somebody wanted to video children, or anything, they'd already be doing it. Digital cameras and camera phones have been around for years.

Bike helmet cams have enabled the cyclist to produce an independent witness in the event of a collision (it is usually the driver's word against yours, and the law is on the side of the motorist not the cyclist)

                          Anyway, we've deviated

Not sure TS, for every advantage there will be a negative.

We should have a much greater network of safe cycle paths, like in Holland.

You I have no doubt use yours for good, but the world isn't made up with people that do good.

So is the intention of this to let people know what crimes are going on in their own area or more to warn people of moving to higher crime areas?
Maybe I'm just nosey but I usually hear through the grapevine about burglaries etc in our area, which are thankfully few and far between.

Mikey...I'd have thought a peado (or anyone for that matter) standing outside a school playground aiming a cycle helmet cam at the kiddies would stand out like a sore thumb, probably nothing to worry too much about
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
