Mountain bike on slicks?

My Saracen mountain bike needs a new back tyre as the sidewalls have perished.
I've taken this opportunity to replace both the nobbly tyres for Schwalbe City Jet slicks! along with new inner tubes as I have patches all over old ones.

95% of my biking is done on tarmac or pavement so whats the point in putting unnnecessary drag on the bike by sticking with nobbly's methinks?
Hoping that by fitting these it will make my trip to the allotment a bit easier, faster and more enjoyable.

Anyone have a mountain bike with racing slicks on it?

Got a good deal from Amazon I think.............two tyres, two tubes for under £24 delivered!

Can't wait for them to be delivered, get them fitted and try them out!

That does sound like a good deal. In fact I think my other half is hitting Amazon right now!!! I agree by the way. Mountain bikes are fun - if you don't want to get anywhere fast on "normal" roads - so much hard work!!

I've got semi slick / knobbly combination tyres.
in the middle semi slick .
knobbly on the outside
pump them up to about 50 on the roads which lifts the knobbly bits of the road then 35 off road for better grip
work quite well on the road provided you don't lean over too far in the corners but I do very few miles on the road

Slicks will decrease your rolling resistance by up to 35%, meaning you will feel as though you are rolling for ever at a higher speed for the same effort as you put in on your original knobbly tyres. We get a lot of folks with MTB's buying slicks, especially if they are doing the Manchester / Blackpool charity ride, but even with slicks you will still be a lot slower than if you were using a proper 'road' or hybrid bike, which most folks would be better buying rather than an MTB (which most buy cos they are fashionable and hence cheaper).

£24 for 2 tyres and tubes is an excellent price Snadger, I hope the quality is good for you and that you can 'feel' the difference!

I put Schwalbe or Continental Touring tyres on my bikes, and Slime inner tubes (puncture resistant)

Like you, I buy on eBay (half price)

I change my tyres to Schwalbe City Jet when I got my MB. You will notice a big difference Snadge, like you say, a lot less drag.

That's what I've got on mine too as it means I can still go on trails etc with no problems but aren't too much of a drag on the road. A really good compromise. Mind you, there is the arguement that it's better exercise with the knobly ones
