I bet some people will be wondering what they they have to 'pull the door to' to 'do'! I saw similar on a shop door the other day, I think it might have been in Leeds & it said 'We are open, please pull the door to though as it's a bit nippy!'
As I'm north of Watford Gap and considered to be northern by my southern friends (and boyfriend!) I say this too.
I 'attempted' to order a chip batch in a southern fish & chips shop once - he had no idea what I was talking about until my fella stepped in and said "She means chips in a roll, mate "
I'm not 'North' (London parents and grew up in hearing range of Heathrow), but the instruction "pull the door to" is one I understand with no problem. It doesn't mean exactly the same as 'shut' though, If the door is shut, it is latched (or equivalent) 'to' means closed without the latch engaging..... (well it did for my parents)
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
But I'm not! I married into Yorkshire. Born and brought up in Manchester. (They do things differently there!)
My dad was born and bred in Sheffield, Yorkshire, but my mum was born and raised in Burnley, Lancashire and she never let us all forget it. She used to say that Yorkshire women made more noise when they washed the dishes so everybody knew they were doing it! Amongst other things!
