we have been granted a sum of money to refurbish old allotments.
we have to provide a communal garden and one for wheelchair users to have access to. so if i include an allotment for wheelchair users what do i have to think about.
all pointers greatly accepted.

I'd ring your local Council. Most have an access officer in their planning or building control departments. They should be able to tell you everything you need to know.

Obviously access, health and safety (surface types? ramps? hand rails?) Faciltities, such as toilets, or water to wash hands - water would need to be at an accessible height - or what about running two supplies, one for disabled users (two heights - one for wheelchair based people, and one for those who are able to stand?) - and then a normal tap elsewhere on the plot?

rules - can anyone use the designated water supply for that allotment for disabled people?

Car parking? Are users able to get from the car park (or road?) to the site easily? Will a dropped pavement have to be installed (seek council permission for this - they will be the ones who will provide this, as they maintain the pavements -- well at least they do here where I am).

What about some sort of shelter? From the sun, I guess? toilets?

Very raised beds perhaps? Disabled people may be unable to get down to 'ordinary gardening level'.
