Travelling around Europe on an ID card?

Due to the fact that cheap flights dont exist in France, when I'm home I'm going to bring Mme P across to the UK on the pretext of seeing my kids. Once there, I'm planning to whisk her away to The Eternal City for a couple of days.
She doesnt have a passport, when we've travelled to UK before its been on her ID card.
Does anyone know if she can then leave the UK to fly to Rome on her ID card? Onward travel to home then wont be a problem.
Tried the Satanic Search Engine but couldnt find an answer.

but one of my friends asked me exactly the same thing last week - we are possibly visiting wales with the english/french conversation group (bunch of winos) and one woman wanted to go with just her ID card and i said i thought engerland would certainly want to see a passport. I know my daughter got back to engerland with just her belgian ID card when she was a student there years ago but things have changed surely.....
so if anyone knows would also be interested in the answer.

I know that when flying from UK airports even on internal flights you have to have at least photo ID. I am about 90% that it as to be a passport but I am sure someone will confirm that.

It seems we are in the EU but do not get certain benefits. When I travelled to France in 2000/2001 by ferry I had to show my passport before boarding. We then found open boarders on the continent.

A resident of that country has to show a passport of their own country on return from abroadsville.
Thus a Brit travelling abroad has to show a Brit passport when coming home, but ....
Due to the Schengen agreement, I know that Europeans dont have to show their passport/ID cards after they have arrived in their first Schengen country.
But the UK isnt part of the Schengen agreement.

Jardiniere, if your friend is French and wants to travel to the UK only on his/her French ID card, no problem. Mme P has been twice with me, plus her youngest daughter did a skool exchange recently, and again only on her ID card.

I know Mme P can come to England with me on her ID card, but I need to know if she can then fly to another Schengen country (Italy) from the UK only using her ID card.

the airline you book with with usually tell you what you need, and list what they consider to be valid ID.
If you can't find it on their site, give em a ring

Believe or not Taff, when I asked them, about 3 hours ago, there was nobody who could give me an answer.
Ryanair was the airline. I have tasked my daughter to phone Sleazyjet and Crybe to see if anyone there can help.

For internal flights you definitely don't need a passport and some airlines don't bother with any ID if you've checked in online - I regularly fly with BA from Manchester to Gatwick and you never need anything. Most do want photo ID though but even a works security pass can do.

Oversees sounds more tricky, I think a lot of UK airports would get confused by anything other than a passport so it might be a bit of a risk.

It's fine so long as it is an ID card from the country she was born in. I wasn't allowed to use a dutch ID card to leave the uk for France as I am a British national, but it would have been fine had I been Dutch. If you are still concerned check with the British consulate in Paris ( you may even end up speaking to my little bro )

Your brother works for the British Consulate in Paris ? Does that mean he does the passports for british peeples wot live in France? We are getting worried about how we renew our passports now we dont have a british address or anyone in engerland who can say we are who we say we are so having a 'friend' in the british consulate would be very very very very useful.......................................................

This could be useful! It's not hard to renew your passport in France, and very quick too.

My OH is just in the process of applying for his new one- to Paris. He's just downloaded the documents ...what a coincidence!!

Looks like it's going to cost a fair bit more though

I'm not sure whether he processes the passports himself but the consulate definitely issues rapid emergency ones if a Brit over there has theirs stolen or lost. I'll have to ask my Dad how they go about renewing their passports as they have been living over there for over 10 years so I'm sure they'll have had to go through the renewal process by now.

Nicos, my friend's son has just done it. Costs a fair bit more than in the UK but he got his back in under a fortnight after sending the forms I think.
Also had other friends who needed one urgently, and she got hers in about 5 days from the first phonecall.
