Well what a great week!

Looks like the family business I work for is being handed over to the over indulged son and I may end up losing my job in the cut backs.

I've been busting my hump to make the company money throughout the recession and at a proper margin to help the company function, whilst he gets to give them away! However, come next weeks 'consultation', because the company oddly hasn't been making the money it needs I could find myself out on my ear!

Gotta love nepotism!

Still, I only have to squirm for 5 days until I learn their decision.

I'm luckier than most in this instance as my wife can go back to work and I'll be the house husband with the baby! However it grates when I was told what was expected of me, margins, targets etc and hitting them most months even in recession, yet could still end up sacrificed.

I wouldn't mind but I had to give up illustration/ graphics etc for a job with greater stability when we had children! Kitchen design sucks!

I'm afraid these days, being made redundant is part of life; and there's going to be plenty more out of work in the coming years.

J and I are just so pleased that we got out of the jobs market when we did, we still watch the Uk news and it's a nightmare. France hasn't been hit as hard but it has an underlying unemployment rate of around 10% and locally, out of the very short tourist season, it's awful.

Best wishes to everybody in the employment/loosing employment situation, perhaps it's time to stop, take stock and look at alternatives.

My BiL has lost 2 jobs in 2 years (he was previously in the same job for 20 years).

His wife had to go full time, which is not so bad as the 3 children are old enough to be latchkey.
They are always extremely lucky that they only owe a couple of grand on their mortgage.

If Mr TS lost his job, we'd be homeless, simple as that. We have a 90% mortgage and there are no jobs round here (haven't been since the 80s)

This is a really scary time for so many people. At school we are holding our breath re our budget for next academic year as there will have to be job cuts and ta's who are our life blood in school and such amazing people who really make a difference to the outcomes for our children will be the ones cut. It is really scary, mr miffy has the same at work in the nhs, as staff leave they are not being replaced and he is currently working double shifts back to back 13/14 hour days it is crazy. I really hope all of you do not suffer as a result of the current economic climate. My son who is in the 16-24 old age bracket can't get an interview no one will even look at him, he has 12 GCSE's at grade a and b but no experience he is totally stuffed!!

Being made redundant last July was the best thing to happen to my career in years. It's a scary prospect, but then so is jumping out of a plane, and that usually ends very well for people that do it.

I was made redundant last year after 11 years with the same company, and am still out of work so I know how it feels. At least you have the option of being a house husband so if the worst happens maybe you should just enjoy having that bonding time with your little one. Not many Dads get the chance....

Best of luck, Dave. I lost my job in July of 2009 and am still looking; the company my partner worked for was just made insolvent. They're tough times, but hopefully it will help to know that you're not alone.

Hopefully you'll be able to use this time to get back into your illustration/graphics in some way.
