I try to make it a point to, when I am out, to be polite to people I meet, to smile at people where I can. I offer thanks to drivers who stop at zebra crossings, all that sort of stuff. In the main the response is positive, so at that level I feel I have done something nice.
Working with teenagers as I do, I have to say that the most bad mannered people I come across are not the young, but older people who seem to think it is their god given right to respect, and to treat young people as scum. Not on, guys!!!

Yeah Zeb, old people are the worst. Bad-tempered, rude ... and don't get me started on the ones zooming along the pavements on their 4WD Scooters! How come kids aren't allowed to cycle on pavements but old biddies are allowed to ride these things which are much bigger, harder and likely to do you more damage? (esp. if the driver is deaf and can't hear you coming!)

BW shouts about demented shopping trolley pushers on pension day, but those disabled buggie riders are ten times worse. They don't even need a licence to drive them .... shouldn't be let out on their own.....

Two sheds, further to what we are saying, I took a group of youngsters out with me today for a walk (8 miles down the bank of the River Medina) and they had a great time. BUT, walking through the town, on a zebra crossing, as the group walked over, and elderly 'gentleman' walking the other way deliberately hunched his shoulders and barged right through the middle of the group. To their credit (remembering the backgrounds) not one of them so much as swore at him, but I was sorely tempted, beleive me

I was in town yesterday, got barged by an older man - no apology,no attempt to avoid me either. I said "ow" really loud so everyone looked at him

Reminded myself of getting barged by a group of teenage girls (not biddies this time) in Brighton...I could see them coming, they looked like trouble. As they came near, I stepped away, slightly turning my shoulder. The girl who tried to barge me got a faceful of rucksack loaded with tins of beans.

At six foot four and 18 stone anyone brave/stupid enough to try barging me usually ends up flat on their back .Best of all I don't have to break stride when it happens

This is like a first impressions thing. When my 21yr old was little and in his push chair, my wife was struggling to get him, the push chair and some shopping through a door to a chemist. A young man with piercings in his face, chains from his nose to his ears, massive great 'kickie' boots, looking like a nazi thug reject stepped away from the gang he was with and held the door for her. My wife thanked him gratefully and he went away with a great pleased grin. I always say, a little act of kindness goes a long way, often both ways.
