  • World Book Night 2011

    Anyone taking part?
Either giving or receiving? I did consider applying but none of the books on the list were titles I couldnt live without.

However I think its a great idea.

I have been given three books, and they arent ones I would have chosen, so maybe they'll broaden my mind.

    How about you?

Nope, didn't know about it, strangely. My In-laws are book people, and often give me books. So far, they have never given me anything that I would have bought for myself. They have also never given me anything I didn't enjoy. I find it too easy to get stuck in a rut, so I have no complaints!

I wish I had got involved in this now, it was mentioned on here a few weeks ago. Very interesting. I have been trying to read one or two of the recent best selling books, but I haven't found anything I like much.

Not involved in this but there are a few people in the village who aren't in the book club, who pass on books to us and we circulate them, even if they aren't featured as our book of the month. When everyone who want to read them has had the chance, I pass them to Daughter-in-law who circulates them in Scarborough. I was given a big bagful on Friday - fantastic! You might not hear from me for a while!

I did apply but never heard anything back.

I'm a giver and chose Life of Pi by Yann Martel. The theory was is would appeal to people of all ages and I wanted to primarily give it to people in the village. It went in the village newsletter and only 4 copies have gone. If anyone wants one let me know (PM). If not I shall have to see id I can find a local book group nearby who might want them.

Life of Pi was a wonderful book - I would recommend it to anyone.
                I got given:
                Beloved by Toni Morrison
                Dissolution by CJ Sansom
and New Selected Poems by Seamus Heany

(I gave the Dissolution book to my OH cos he reads loads of historical biographies and histories, he was chuffed with it too)
Such a good idea, I really hope they do it again next year.

Plus I get to read books (and poems) I had not before considered .

I was given Stuart; A Life Backwards a biography by Alexander Masters.

Never in a million years would I have chosen this book for myself, so I'm grateful that it was given to me. It is a life changing story. Stuart is a 'polydrug-addicted, alcoholic Jekyll and Hyde personality' He's a thief, he's psychotic and when his 'black mist' descends he is violent and unpredictable. He has been in and out of institutions since he was 11. He is also gentle, kind, polite and tolerant and his story will touch your soul.

If you read this book, and you should, it will change the way you see homeless people for the rest of your life.
