The eternal city

So, I've got the dog looked after, picked up some cheap flights, sorted out the travelling with identity card through Europe business, even arranged transport to and from skool for her kids whilst I take Mme P to Rome for a few days (shhh its a secret, she doesnt know!)
Buuuuuut I've never been before. Has anyone got any hotel recommendations? No matter what budget/style etc, personal recommendations are always a winner.
I've looked through a fair few sites with guests comments etc, but would prefer the expertise of Grapes.

OH was in Rome a couple of weeks ago, she stayed here Rome Luxury Hotels- Waldorf Astoria Collection hotels and resorts - Rome Luxury Accommodation, Hotel Resort Dont know how much it cost as she doesn't have to pay for any hotel. She did say it was outstanding

I love Rome but it's more that 5 years since I was last there, so I can't guarentee these recommendations are up to date.

I usually stay here Hotel Adriano Rome | Official Website | Boutique Hotel near Spanish Steps not so much for the hotel as the location, very close to Piazza Navona and a fairly short stroll to Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. The Spanish Steps, and closest metro station, is less that 10 mins walk. The entrance is on a cobbled back street so there isn't too much traffic noise (but some mopeds).

Just south of Piazza Navona is Da Baffeto pizzaria, which guide books rave about. The only time I ever passed it without there being a long queue I took the opportunity to try it and found it was excellent (nothing sophisticated about it but very good food).

While out and about there's a convenience store directly opposite the Trevi fountain that I found very good value for e.g. cold drinks given it's location on top of such a major tourist attraction.

The famous San Crispino ice cream has a branch very close to Trevi, head north east on Via del Lavatore and it's second or third side street on the left. Expensive, but it really was the best ice cream I've ever had.

Enjoy yourself, Rome is a wonderful place.

Thanks to Teb and Sheepish for your recommendations. We will go to the posh one, but if I love Rome (as I'm sure I will) we will use your one Sheepish, and will certainly check out the ice cream on this first trip.

She loved it as much as me Pipkins.
We drove up to Paris the night before and stayed with her sister, but I didnt tell her where we were going till we actually got to the airport. She was well chuffed, got off the plane into beautiful sunshine, and it really did only get better.
