  • St. Patricks Day.

    [Hi all,
I just want to take this oppertunity to send St Patricks Day greetings to all. Especially though to those who may have Irish roots.
we are in for a good weekend. As it falls on a Sat. this year we are having a bank holiday on monday, so a nice long weekend for us.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Not meaning to sound rude, but do the Irish do anything other than party to celebrate St. Patrick? Is there any folk-lore stuff?

    Happy St. Patricks Days!

OH is from Belfast so we'll have a bit of a celebration tomorrow but tomorrow night will be busy for me - bouncing at the club and it's open all day for St Paddy's Day so there will be a lot of drunken Oirishmen about by the time I have to start work.
Anyway, gotta stay sensible for Mummy's Day on Sunday !

Oh, come on SBP, the celebration is all about singing all the old songs, remembering the Celtic past and getting wonderfully 'out of it' in His Name (isn't it?)

I lived in SomersTown in London once whhere there was a marvelous pub called the Lion and the Lamb. It was full of Scottish/Irish Catholics who used to pole in after Mass on Saturday. They had a band which played every week: accordian and drums; all the locals had their own seats, and used to sing their own songs. There would be an unholy scrum if someone tried to sing someone else's song - tables and chairs flying.
It was the most warm and welcoming place I found in London. When I visited after moving away it was 'Hello, how are you, come in, sit down....' The very spirit of Paddy.

I shall put the Dubliners/Pogues and Chieftans and Kellys Heroes and sing my heart out tomorrow night. Used to go to the labour Club before 'nulab' closed it down.

There are many good reasons for drinking,
One has just entered my head-
If a man doesn't drink when he's living,
How the hell can he drink when he's dead?

          --------------

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

          --------------

May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.

          -----------

For each petal on the shamrock.
This brings a wish your way
Good health, good luck, and happiness
          For today and every day.

          -----------

If I could be anywhere in the world tomorrow there is ony one place I would want to be .Dublin , In the Temple bar area .

There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

Yes, Manda there is folk-lore stuff but its usually in the pubs. When i say that I mean traditional Irish pubs. Theres a fireworks display tomorrow night. There will be amusements for the children in the city centre. There will be Irish groups playing traditional in the city centre. As with every big city, there will be a mixture of all kinds but it will mainly be based around all things Irish, especially as there will be so many foreign visitors in Dublin for thr parade.

Beefy, could'nt agree with you more. We have a bank holiday here on Monday as St Paddys day falls on a Saturday this year, so, another extra day to party.

I've only been to Ireland once, we spent a week in Tipperary, but we visited Cashel and saw some Irish high crosses. We also found a rag tree within a stone circle, that formed a sort of apotrapaic cordon. Also when we were looking around an old half-ruined church there was a sign on the wall saying something like 'No burials here'. Odd we thought, and then realised why, there was a 'newish' burial dug (with bits of bone scattered on the surface of the 'mound' from digging the hole), it must have been Romany's (?) still using the church for burials?

Amazing juxtaposition of pagan and catholic. Would love to go back and see the Boyne Valley.

                  Enjoy St. Patricks Day Bramble.
