Well, now I'm totally confused....................... personally my fav veg is Swede followed closely by Mushroom (if that is a veg).

Can I pick peas (even though I'm Scottish) I'd pick neeps as a Scottish veg but I prefer peas.

Spud, but a particular variety, it HAS to be a King Edward!
Failing that, carrot or parsnip. Dried peas are simply the cold climate lentil, and green peas have such a short season (unless you freeze them) but without a freezer you can still eat most root veg local-grown all year round!

Before the spud made it to our shores I believe parsnips were a staple for most people. So it has to be ..... PARSNIPS!

Tricky one this .......... I suspect that as spuds are out peas will win due to their near universal popularity & great versatility

Peas and runner beans......for me with peas edging out the runner at the finish. I deny anyone to not adore tasting that very first pea of the season fresh from the pod.

More versatile than the runner too.......mind you I love roasted snips

I have a reprint of a very old gardening book (1855) and it states that celeriac is not much known in England, rarely grown in France but is widely grown in Germany....
.....and I thought that potatoes were introduced by Sir walter Raleigh from south America , as parsnips used to be used pre-potato days......and my book says that The Parsnep is little known out of Great Britain and Ireland.

Yep, spuds are a recent interloper from South America. Peas have history here! As they were usually eaten as 'mushy' peas they could be had all year round. It was considered wasteful to eat fresh peas and only the rich could afford to do it.

Runner beans! Got to be .... but only when they're fresh. Frozen aren't a patch on the real thing and then .... everything else except aubergines which are horrid! How can the French lay claim to the onion? I can't think of a single 'cuisine' where onion is not an integral part.
