My grandmother and mother were teachers. I chose to teach infants and loved it until the eary 1980s then I got out while I still could.

The days of Teacher being a respected member of the community, who could rely on their own (trained) judgement about children and their abilities, and who had time to 'stop and wonder' with their class have long gone more's the pity.

Im not getting at the teachers .I work in a school as a groundsman/ gardener and in the last year have had my eyes opened as to what the teachers have to put up with. I've had to take a days training to ensure I follow the correct procedures .
I want to state that I think 99% of teachers do a fantastic job considering the rules and regulations that they have to work under.
There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

I Think Education Went Down The Drain When They Abolished The Cane And Slipper As All Respect For The Schooling System Is Now Lost.
I Had My Teenage Daughter's Parent Evening Last Thursday And Got Talking To The Music Teacher And He Said She Was Doing Fine. Also He Was On About The Fact They Lost The First Term To A Group Of Kids Who Missed Behaved And Had To Send The Good Kids To A Diffrent Room To Get On With There Work , What Happened To Sending The Bad People To The Headmaster ?
The 3r's Seam To Be A Thing Of The Past , They Don't Now There Times Table Or Even What A Fortnight Is , And It Not Just My Kids I Asked There Friends As Well!
This One I Don't Blame The Teachers As They Are Told What To Teach But On The System They Have To Do There Job In , What Other Job Would Expect You To Do It Well With One Arm Tide Behind Your Back.
No Wonder The Bosses Are Looking To The Older Generation For There New Work Force , They Don't Have Strings Of A+ But They Have Something Much More Valuable ( Life Experiance )

Problems with teaching (from a teacher)
              1) Too much paperwork, brought in by people who don't know the job
              2) Target driven teaching, instead of personal achievement
              3) Too much interference by outsiders
              4) Not enough discipline at the teacher level
              5) TOO MUCH POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
              6) Too many high schools concerned with funding, so they keep on the 'badly behaved' kids just so that they get the money. Therefore, people in my end of the professional have to put the pieces back together!

There are too many more to mention, but these are, in my opinion, the most important ones. At the risk of offending some people, if you do not know what my, and other teachers jobs entail, shut yer fat mouths and let us get on with it!

Very interesting read this thread. I have to say that my daughter's teacher is great and very child focused. However Miss EB is still in Reception which seems to be different to the rest anyway because the children are "being broken in gently".

Had we had the money Miss EB would have gone to a Steiner school after her Montessori playgroup/nursery, but as it is we are not in that position. We feel however that she is a caring environment which will help her achieve academically and develop personally. We still have the option in this country if circumstances permit to home-educate.

We've probably all had good teachers and bad. I know I did throughout my schooling. I agree that things have gone too PC and are riddled with more paperwork than ever (just like the NHS) but I am also aware that the really bad teachers etc are few and far between. Like good nursing staff good teachers need our support and encouragement.

P.S. looking forward to the soup in a boot recipe JTG

I cannot, in all truth, say that it is just modern teaching methods etc that are wrong. After all, I am 57 years old (yes you may say I don't look it!!!), and I can remember my first school, where I was, for a while, the only left handed child in the school! I have to say, I went through HELL, because the school refused to pander to my 'strangeness'. I had sore knuckles for weeks, because they used to crack them with a wooden rule every time I tried to write with my left, and I actually spent part of the time with my left arm tied (!!!!!!) so I couldn't use it. However, I won through, and am still, proudly, left handed. discipline gone mad, eh. Having said that, there was a teacher there, a large lady, who operated with a rod of iron, but was extremely fair, and very kind. Just woe betide anyone who broke the rules, but she was lovely.

I Agree There Was Teachers In The Past Who Would Hit A Pupil On A Regular Basis ( Because It Was Good For Them ? ) And I'm Glad That Part Of Teaching Has Gone For Good , But We Have Gone To Far The Other Way .
When I Was At The Comprehensive Your Parants Had To Sign A Form To Say You Could Receive The Cane And All Parents But One Did , And Guess Who Was The Badiest Kid In School.
I'm Not Saying Caning Is The Beall And Endall And I Hope The Headteachers Never Have To Use It Again So Keeping It Locked Away In A Cupboard But If They Use It Once On A Pupil In Front Of The Whole School ! Then Teachers Will Get On With There Jobs A Whole Lot Easier Because No One Will Dare Speak Out Of Turn.

I must defend teachers, having been one myself and also the Chair of Govenors at the village primary school. I do agree that there good and bad teachers but in my experiance there is too much red tape and beaurocracy imposed on all of them. Gone are the days when a good teacher could teach, they have to abide by rules imposed by the Government and Advisors. Half of whom couldn't do the job any way and have no idea what it is about.

Why do you think I got out?

I do think we have a lot of teachers who CARE about educating our children. The problem is as mentioned before is the interference from people who have no idea. Yes the good teachers are dissolusioned and leave in their droves, much like the NHS. We no longer have a society where a teacher can dissipline without some of the parents making complaints. I can imagine why some of these teachers really do give up.

They go to school, go to University (school with a bar), teacher training (school) then back to school to teach.

The only ones I have respect for are the collage teachers who in the most part did the job, before teaching it. The people who taught me to weld were ex welders, they knew it back to front, they could do it.

They put poor as my son's report for his Computer use. When he was 6. I was livid and went to have a word with the girlie that was teaching him.
