I believe eucalyptus needs treating with caution as firewood..... The difference in leafe shape on new and old wood is interesting, but on the whle, I'd rather be without the things!

Mikeywills - oh yes we know alright.....it grows like mad, but what can we do, it is close to several gardens so we really do need to keep it under control. The local cats love it, birds love it and by the number of worried locals asking after it as -18 deg has turned it brown, others like it too - its our duty and love of it really, that keeps us paying dearly for it! silly HF. Without its regular hair cut I have no idea how tall it would be - or even if it would still be standing as a lot of the tall ones fall in strong winds.
They really should come with a very strong warning though.

It does not, it's perfect, comes with combustible oils in it or something, so goes up a treat. An absolute bugger to chop though, probably the worst I've ever done.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Yeah, 'goes up' so well it could become dangerous, THAT is what I was suggesting caution about!

Well, I've burnt a whole huge tree and had no problems at all, far from dangerous. It burns well, like alot of woods, but it's not petrol

Maybe you should try it yourself.

Not got the option. Our only fireplace is in Spain, and there aren't any Eucalyptus in the area. They stopped growing them for timber because they out-compete the native pines, and make dry land even dryer!
To me it is a weed-of-a-tree, although I'll concede that young growth is pretty.
