Can anyone suggest places to visit while we are there?

Beth Chatto Garden, Elmstead Market.

Only been once, enjoyed it, and came back with several plants. I wasn't even 'into' gardening then!

One of my favourite places is Walton on The Naze...it's got a little stretch of whatever you fancy from a British seaside,ranging from a pier and all the naff stuff to cliffs and rock pools at the other end...and lots of fossils and sharks teeth to be found.

I can!! come to brightlingsea, have a walk along the prom, an ice cream (or cup of tea if its cold) from the sea front cafe.

Other good walking places, walton on the naze (as mentioned), frinton-on-sea, st osyth. Stour woods wrabness is nice.

very good garden centre (hearts delight) at manningtree, good for a look around, very nice food in their cafe.

Depends on what you would like to do and how far you want to travel

Colchester is a worth a look - castle and shops
Mersea Island and have some oysters

Chelmsford and Hyalnds House may be a bit far? But if you come out this far I dont know whether the shop at Writtle College is still open?
