am I right that band A vehicles pay no tax? (they still cost us in terms of road repairs, pollution, congestion etc)
So what's a bicycle? Band minus A? I'm still trying to get paid mileage for not having a car at all!

I think they pay about £35 a year - please correct me if I'm wrong though!!

Ridiculous, isn't it. You do exactly what the Govt want - don't drive a car, but don't get anything good out of it (except for toned legs)

Ok, tried the calculator and my family will be £130 give or take better off on income tax, however the council have increased my council tax above inflation, I am effectively getting a pay cut this year (another story), my mortgage will undoubtedly go up when it is reviewed later in the year etc. etc. So in real terms (ie cash in pocket) we will probably only be better off if we can crack the virtual self-sufficiency on fruit and veg thing and I can convert the family to a largely (75%) veggie diet.

                  The rich get richer.....

The more income you have in the basic rate band, the more you will benefit from the 2% reduction in basic rate.

Thus, those on low incomes who currently enjoy a 10% rate on earnings or other non-savings income, will suffer an increase in their tax bills - unless they can benefit from the increases to working tax credits. - The Beeb.

According to the calculator I'm going to be better off although i did slightly underestimate the amount of alcohol consumed.

Apart from the council tax and mortgage I'm trying to work out how they are going to take it back off me - sneaky devils!

Good - let's go for it. I'll start.

My tax goes towards paying for elderly people to have hip replacements. I rest my case.

C'mon HATH if you're big enough.

Two Sheds, I'm sure you are a very competent and responsible cyclist but as I was walking to my car this evening I had to go across one of the roads on the edge of a roundabout. I crossed the first part of the road and was looking for a break in the traffic to cross the second part, when to my dismay I saw a grown man riding a bicycle heading towards the roundabout , in the dark, without lights. I was gobsmacked and don't think the guy realised how close to death he was. When I eventually got across the road still watching him, another cyclist, again with no lights, and riding on the path nearly crashed into me then sped across the same roundabout entrance!!
I just wonder what the death toll is for irrespondible cyclists?

Moan over, I had to buy a four pack to drink when I got home to get over the shock!
