Tax on Cars parked on Pavements
    I wish!
I'm sure none of you Grapes park on pavements or bike lanes, but can anyone think of why anyone should think its okay to do this? (but not ok to have a bicycle on the pavement!)

I think it's because people don't have a lot these days... Just smallish pastiche homes. Parking on the pavement lets them claim the street outside their house as if it were their own.

A lot of houses and streets were built before cars were popular. consequently street roads wer'nt made wide enough Most people park in front of their house half on the path as the road is not wide enough to accomodate a car parked at either side of the road. If they parked fully on the road, in front of their house and their opposite number did the same there would not be enough room for traffic to pass!
Most people like to have their car parked in front of there own house so they can keep an eye on it!
As long as they are only half on the path allowing wheelchairs etc to pass where's the problem?

I suppose the real problem is you can't please all of the people all of the time!

If some moron decides it wants to park on the pavement & it's car gets badly scratched because I have to nearly walk over it tough!
I don't walk on the road so don't park on the pavement.

I actually park my car on the area at the front of the house which belongs to me. I have the choice to wall/fence it and make it a garden but it is the perfect size to store my beloved Golf. If anyone dares to scratch it while walking by on the pavement I would be very cross as the whole pavement is left clear.

Shirl, Not suggesting cars should be scratched at all, certainly not if they are parked properly, on the road.

However, I note in our local paper that a huge number of vehicles are 'vandalised' ie scratched, every week...coincidentally, we also have a huge number of vehicles parked on pavements EVEN ON WIDE ROADS! (sorry to shout)

(and no, Snadger, they don't think to allow enough space to get thru - my sis has a disabled son in a buggy and often has to push him out on the road because some cretin is blocking the path with their big fat car)

I don't have a shed on my lottie and have a job getting my tools along some of the paths because of the cars parked on them.

I think people have too many cars these days... it is just not cost effective having two per family... even if I needed to go to two different workplaces and drop the kids off, it doesn't justify the extra expenditure.

I also find that modern developments do not have especially sensible parking.

I don't park my Golf on the road in case it gets hit - we live just off a roundabout and the speed some folks hurtle past our house I worry about my precious babe. The everyday cars are indeed parked on the road as they don't matter the same. However, there is always a pavement width between the Golf and the everyday car - I would be seriously cheesed if anyone hit either car! A few years ago OH bought me a Freelander as a wedding anniversary prezzy (okay more money than sense at the time maybe) but I do have horses and kids with bikes and a dog etc so it was used and well muddied as my avatar at one time showed) - got well cross when parked at the supermarket and some muppet put a shopping box on the bonnet of my brand new car!!! Scratched all to heck.

You would hate our family then Simon - we have a collection of old cars - however, they are not all outside the house!

It would be totally ridiculous for Mr OWG and me to only have one car (unless one of us gave up work).

I work 20 miles north of where we live (all country roads etc) and Mr OWG works 30 miles south of where we live (mainly motorways and A roads).

We don't have a choice of getting a closer job, or even using public transport. If we had to have only one car, one of us would constantly be late to work (or one of us would work more hours, as we'd have to be there hours early)

That's the only thing I hate that we can't change. We recycle, freecycle, grow our own, buy local produce etc, but the flippin' cars are the problem!!

Shirlthegirl: It's not a problem... They just need proper storage/parking.

Dare I say the odd scratch doesn't matter if you have a working vehicle

It seems to be a feature of medern house/estate/ghetto deign that cars get pride of place out front where we can all see them. Talk to architects and they will say that people want their garden space round the back, where they can be private!!!!!!!!!!

Then they cram so many houses in that people are overlooked by 15 other properties!!!!!!!!!

Yes I agree - tax cars on pavements. Hull City Council employ flying traffic wardens on scooters to do just that. I've seen them handing out tickets at 11pm.

Can I say that I *never* park my car on the pavement at home!!

I know too well the perils of trying to get past a badly parked car.

There is a house near to us that has 5 cars. 3 down the drive and 2 outside. One of them normally takes up the entire pavement.

Try walking a dog down there. Cars generally don't slow down and I have to get me and the dog safely past a whole large car width with inches to spare. Would hate to have a buggy or wheelchair!
