There's a cycle lane near here that goes through a bus shelter.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I have major beef with people parking on the pavement around here, in some places i can see why they do it - to not block the road, and these are mostly quiet places where prams etc are reasonably safe to go on the road. However, in other places they are quite obviously parking on the pavement to keep their car 'safe' from faster moving traffic, or so it's closer to their house, and that makes my blood boil. Why the hell should children be put at risk on the road so that a car can be kept 'safe' on the pavement?! And it is in the highway code that vehicles should not mount the pavement at any time except for access to a driveway. It's not 'an offence' though I don't think. This is the sort of thing that comes under 'common courtesy' or even 'common-sense', which seems to be lacking these days...

I used to find that my big Silver Cross pram with odd shaped metal knobbly bits sticking off the sides was the best thing for trying to get past 'badly parked' cars...

Hi, new poster today but may as well start with a rant. My house is on a 1980's estate where the last metre or so of garden doesnt belong to the householder as contains utilities, but is all lawned to save on tarmac, etc and edges road. as its indistinguishable from the rest of lawn i have to look after it - as we do in order to make garden tidy, but people just park on it sometimes almost a whole car width. As i dont actually own it I have no recourse at all and they know it. Busy gym round corner and a marina nearby so gets a bit busy and often come home to find someone parked on "my" lawn. Not even able to reason with them as they complain i am intimidating. Any ideas - apart from broken glass? Not allowed to fence it off or put boulders. Rant over.

Sowed parsnips today now soil has warmed up a bit. Hope i get more than the dozen or so last year.

One of the problems you get on new estates is no one uses their garage to park their cars in. Only one of the 27 houses on our estate puts their in the garage.
It's not the growing old I mind but the growing stupid with it!

As ever, Grandpa, you speak a great deal of sense - I have a garage and a parking spot at tthe back of my house. I have one car, I park in the garage. A visitor can park in the parking spot. Oh - did I tell you that not only is my insurance less expensive because I declare that I park in my garage - but my car IS safer because that I park in my garage.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are sheep...if one or two are parked on pavements, everyone else seems to think its ok. Same with driving in cycle lanes...same with parking in disabled bays "just for a minute"

I agree totally. Mind you, I was guilty of parking in disabled bays without a disabled ticket last year when I took my father in law shopping after he broke his foot. There should be a 'temporary disabled badge' available for those who have done themselves an injury - pushing a chap in a wheelchair around the whole carpark when you have ME is no fun!! Would never consider it otherwise.

                              Hi

Quote "Why then do the cyclists still cycle along the road?"

I dont cycle very much these days, but when I did I often thought it was safer to use the road than the cycle paths.
If you can imagine just cycling up the road, lets say 1 foot from the curb, all the cars can see you, shouldnt be any danger.
Or usuing the ill thought out cycle lanes, one minute you are on the pavement next on the road next on the pavement, then you rejoin again. And thats ignoring the pedestrians.

that's EXACTLY my point. Every day, people are trying to use wheelchairs and pushchairs on pavements, but they are blocked by selfish parking. It is just as bad to park next to a dropped kerb - try manoevering a heavy wheelchair down off a pavement with a high kerb, twenty times a day.

Perhaps this is why you get motorised scooters using the road and holding up the traffic? Cos they can't get up and down the pavements
