I (actually before my OH died, we) had a boundary dispute with our next-door-neighbour. This was resolved when he went bust and I put in a fence on the boundary when the property was up for sale.
The trees that belonged to me but were on the other side of the fence for several years weren't looked after properly and were being strangled by ivy. I have been gradually removing this. Of the 5 trees I have managed to save 4, but one was so covered there was no way to see the trunk at all. I cut all the way round the bottom of the stems and started to pull it away as it relinquished its hold. That's when I found that the ivy was all there was holding the tree up. Having cut through the ivy stems I've left the tree with no support.
How on earth it's producing leaves at the top I do not know. I've called in someone to deal with it, an expense I really don't need.
There are no nests in it by the way.

But -18.5 over the winter has taken it toll.....tree man due any time now. We hope to save the tree...... they can stand bush fires so we hope the frost damage, to what seems like ALL the leaves, is just a surface thing.
