Am I Missing Something?

Caught an ad on TV the other night urging us to buy the latest in Germ -prevention items
- A Motion-Sensor Bacterial Soap Dispenser.
"Never touch a dirty soap dispenser again!" cries the voice-over.
Now, forgive me if I'm barking up the wrong tree, but what is the point of this? Surely the next thing you do after touching a "dirty soap dispenser" is WASH YOUR HANDS!! You don't touch the blumming thing again until the next time you - wait for it - WASH YOUR HANDS!
I think there is far more risk of cross contamination from turning off the tap after your ablutions!

It annoys the hell out of me, but then again, so does the one that intimates that you have to drink whatever brand it is of bottled water in order to be healthy and have water fights in the sun with your children. Drink the stuff that you're already paying for out the tap rather than clutter up the world with more plastic bottles which may (or may not) leech nasties into the water anyway!

When my kids were at school one family was always down with stomach bugs. It was the family whose mum boiled and scrubbed everything to death. You need to be clean but there's a difference between cleanliness and obsession. Her kids had no resistance to the normal environment.

No, you're not missing anything - the advertisers are battening on people's fears. As you say - touch the soap dispenser and - now wash your hands please! Mad. But they'll con money out of someone like this.

Oh I SO agree. My sister and I regularly have a good rant about, especially, that STOOPID soap dispenser.

I agree with you Creemteez - however I was rather embarassed when a friend came to stay who has a bit of a cleanliness obsession and I realised the pump on my handwash dispenser was rather - erm grubby to say the least. Seed compost was the culprit but it was not a good look!

I don't like to use bars of soap as they always end up looking dirty and germy. However I had a hygiene inspector over to check out my home because I'm a childminder. He said they require you to have anti-bacterial soap but it's fine if it's a bar, which suprised me. They also say you have to use 'single use' hand towel to prevent cross-contamination, very odd, because you'll be using the towel AFTER washing your hands.

You turn it on with un clean hands, use soap , washy washy then you turn off the dirty TAP

When my sister was in isolation, before going to see her, we had to wash our hands a total of 4 times before getting to her room, hibiscrub plus the alcohol hand gel...

My hands have never been so clean before (or covered in so much dry skin!)

Now I look at my hands, they are filthy - I've been working in the garden, playing with the dogs and the hens etc; but I'm hardly ever ill... I must have a good germ resistance!!

I grew up playing in a dirty old creek (bliss) and am a terror for plucking veg out of soil, quick wipe on skirt and into my mouth .... yum yum

Well you also have to take into consideration that little boys will sometimes wee on themselves and dry their hands in the towel without having washed them, contaminating the towel for all other clean hands!

Like you I believed a soap bar or dispenser dispensing soap is not going to cause you a problem when you are then washing your hands. Not sure how this sits with the alcohol stuff they use in hospitals, which you don't then wash off?

The alcohol should kill most of the bacteria, heck even soap does. The towel just dries your hands, alcohol dries quick enough to dispense with the towel.

So glad I'm not alone! I firmly believe we are breeding a generation of people with no natural resistance to anything!
I do a spot of weekly cleaning for a girl in the village. Her place is PRISTINE! - I'm sure she cleans before I arrive! - It makes me feel a bit of a fraud for taking her money! The cupboard under the sink is bulging with every kind of cleaning product and wipe and yet she is always complaining about the fact that her two small children have come down with some bug or other!

Yep it annoys me too but discovered it's good for little ones learning to wash their hands as they love the novelty, so my child-minder has one. I find those adverts that show raw chicken turning into a lolly or something equally emotive and panicking to parents really offensive. Of course we need to be clean but hot water and soap is fine for cleaning - we don't need to have 99.9.9.9% of germs killed - not all of them are harmful for goodness sake.

All I have in my cleaning cupboard is 5 ltr container of a professional multi purpose cleaner (dilute according to use), stacks of microfibre clothes (a million miles better than cloths for cleaning & buffing) and a bottle of method bathroom cleaner (great for light limescale) and not above using the 5 second rule, especially in the house

I think a bit of muck on a carrot makes it taste sooooo much better .
