  • Common Courtesy & Good Manners...

...where have they all gone. Why do some people think its OK to let a door close in your face when your about to walk through it. Why do some people just push past without saying "Excuse me" first.
And the one that bugs me more than any other, when you hold the door open or stand to one side so people can pass...why do they not say thank you.
I was always told that manners cost nothing, please & thank you were mandatory in our house.
What's your take on this...am I on mi own with this conclusion???

    I agree completely Ginge.

I get really frustrated by people who don't give way on footpaths. For example, last weekend, we were in London to watch the Marathon. We were walking out of Tower Hill tube station, past the Tower of London. The footpath is quite wide, with a wall on one side and a railing on the other. People walking towards the tube station were 5 abreast. We were walking the other way, and they wouldn't move over to let us go through in single file!

Warning - never cross a seriously hormonal woman.

I retaliated by setting my shoulders, sticking out my elbow, and bashing purposefully into anyone who wouldn't get out of my frickin' way...and saying 'Thank you!' in a loud and sarcastic manner.

Does England need a new scrum half I wonder?

Or shop assistants who carry on entire conversations with their friends/other workers whilst serving you.... argh!

I know that shop work is repetitive and boring and you'd much rather be doing something else... however, a 'hello' and 'thank you/bye' is just common manners....

Or when you've been sat there for 10 mins being ignored and someone walk by saying 'Are you being seen to' expecting to be told 'yes'; erm 'No actually, nobody is seeing to me at all, I've been sat here being ignored for 10 mins'.

Do unto others as they would do unto you,but do it first

I try and let other cars through when there is only space for one of us - but I get more than a little annoyed if they sail through without acknowledgement!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Failing to indicate at a roundabout! Not sure if that is classed as good manners or commonsense but it bugs the hell out of me!

Or customers who come through the checkout on their phone and continue their inane chat and totally ignore the cashier. I had one on Thursday like that. She wanted a refund, just shoved her garment at me and chatted on................so I just stood there and waited for her to acknowledge me. Well, I'm not a mind reader am I? After about 3 or 4 mins the customer behind poked her and said 'we are all waiting for you dear' and guess what...... she didn't even apologise. GRRRR. Luckily the other 2 customers were on my side and as she left, still chatting, said a loud 'How rude'

Some peeps need a darned good slapping - along with the litter louts

(..ooo...maybe being a Mod I'm not supposed to say that- but bad manners/respect for others- and litter louts make more than my blood boil!)

urm ..publicly saying something at the time would at least make the point

Maybe the old fashioned idea of standing up in the classroom when the teacher entered wasn't such a stupid idea after all????

I reckon without respect for others - we've all missed the point!!!!

I find a very LOUD "You are welcome" makes a point if I hold a door open for someone (usually at work, they don't get a second chance!).

I hope this isn't just us old fogies showing our age, but all that has been said before really bugs me.

My GF thought she might have to drag me off the ignorant woman who just pushed past me at the local Garden Centre clothes franchise with assistant in tow the other day - the ignorant so and so even had the nerve to tell me it wasn't my fault!! Suffice it so say I avoided a long stay at HMP by a hair's breadth...
