Lime plaster often contains horsehair (even when being applied today, I went on a practical course). Since 1908 it has been treated to remove the anthrax risk (will have to ask exactly what changed in 1908, but I do know that is the relevant date). There is normally a 'top coat' that is hair-free, but underlayers the hair helps it hold together, and makes the whole thing even more flexible (necessary in an old building).

No1 son has stripped off the rest of the loose plaster ready for the man(plasterer) coming round tomorrow or Monday.

The plasterer is coming to-day to "give" us a new ceiling.

Ceiling now dried out so tomorrow I'm going to "seal" it with a dose of PVA then on Saturday paint.

The carpet cleaners are coming on Wednesday.

So the remedial work gets your seal of approval then ?

Hope your mother is making a good recovery BW. Sounds like you've got yourself a new lounge.

Know what it's like - we stripped all of our artex off, had it pre-gritted then plastered - nightmare. Then the other day I lost my balance in the lost, and poked a pair of pliers through the celing in the bog (i had them in my hand) right next to a light fitting! Glad I didn't touch the wires, and that the new light covers the hole up! No one will ever know

Well until I come to redecorate then moan that the plaster knocked a big hole in the celing, then remember it actually was me.

but yes, perhaps I should be a plasterer... I felt a huge gaping hole in my pocket (and what felt like my backside too, if you know what I mean) after he'd left and we'd paid him.
